Located in Nova Scotia, Canso combines the history of an important fishing base with a historic site, a waterfront trail and a summer music festival. When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between these highlights: the Canso Islands National Historic Site represents the area’s fishing history, the Canso Waterfront Trail offers views of Grassy Island, and the Stan Rogers Folk Festival is a recurring cultural event. Together, they offer ways to explore the area through its history, waterfront and events.

Fishing History of the Canso Islands

The Canso Islands National Historic Site is located on the waterfront in Canso. It was designated because the area was an important fishing base: the French first developed the site in the 16th century, followed by the British in the first half of the 18th century. This sequence reveals two phases of development and places the area’s history across several centuries.

Grassy Island and Its Trails

The site includes the Grassy Island Fort National Historic Site of Canada. Visitors may have the opportunity to take a ferry to Grassy Island and explore its walking trails and the remains of an 18th-century fishing outpost. Ferry service depends on operations and weather; check before your visit to see whether a crossing is available.

The Canso Waterfront Trail and Whitman House

The Canso Waterfront Trail runs along Canso’s waterfront, offers views of Grassy Island and is a useful way to get your bearings in town. It offers a different focus from the walking trails on Grassy Island: here, the emphasis is on the waterfront views; there, it’s on exploring the trails and remains of the historic fishing outpost.

The Canso Museum: Whitman House features exhibits from Canso Harbour. It adds a tangible connection to the harbour to the history of the fishing base: the museum focuses on objects from the harbour, while the National Historic Site marks the successive phases in the fishing base’s development.

Another Trail in the Wider Destination of Guysborough County

The Guysborough Waterfront Trail begins at the end of Main Street in Guysborough, is 3.5 km long and offers opportunities to enjoy the views and watch birds. It is a different regional point of reference from the Canso Waterfront Trail: the former is located in Guysborough, while the latter runs along the waterfront in Canso and offers views of Grassy Island.

The Stan Rogers Folk Festival

The Stan Rogers Folk Festival is hosted every summer by the small fishing community of Canso and was established in 1997 in honour of the late Canadian folk singer-songwriter Stan Rogers. Within the wider destination of Guysborough County, it takes place on the last weekend of July on the outskirts of Canso. Festival dates and programming may change; check the latest information if you’re planning your trip around the event.
