Avola brings together local history, community life and nature conservation. If you’re looking for a hotel in Avola, distinguishing local facilities and stories from the wider Thompson-Nicola travel area can help with your trip planning. This can help you decide which topics will shape your stay in Avola and which regional activities you may also be interested in.

Local History and Community Life

Avola’s post office opened on September 1, 1913. The 1930 British Columbia Gazetteer listed Avola as a post office and railway station. These dates refer to two different historical milestones: the opening of the post office and a later listing of Avola under both designations.

The Avola Schoolhouse is part of community life. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District owns and operates it as a community hall. Alongside the historic local references, it therefore has a clearly identified community purpose.

Nature Conservation and Local Projects

On September 30, 2015, The Land Conservancy of British Columbia completed the transfer of Avola Creek to the Nature Conservancy of Canada for ongoing stewardship. Avola Pond is another nature conservation site: its restoration project supports between 30 and 50 spawning Coho salmon. The two references have different focuses—the ongoing stewardship of Avola Creek and support for a spawning habitat at the pond.

Several projects in parks and at the cemetery are also associated with specific years. A playground at Avola Community Park was renovated in 2014, and a picnic shelter was added there in 2016. A new sign and map kiosk were installed at Avola Cemetery in 2020. In 2021, a permanent concrete toilet facility with a pit was built at Diamond Drive Park. If you plan to use any of these facilities, check their current condition in advance; for the toilet facility, also check whether it is operating.

Accommodation and Practical Planning

Avola Mountain Lodge offers guests secure parking, free Wi-Fi, fully equipped kitchenette units and barbecue facilities. A complimentary continental breakfast with freshly brewed coffee is served every morning. The combination of kitchenettes and barbecue facilities on the one hand, and breakfast on the other, can help you decide which of these listed amenities are important for your stay. When making specific booking plans, you can check current availability directly with the provider.

For residents of Avola and Blue River, Clearwater & Area Transit is scheduled to provide a bus service to Kamloops and back on the first Thursday of every month. The service is intended for residents. Before traveling, check the current schedule and any reservation requirements rather than assuming it is generally available to all visitors.

Within the wider Thompson-Nicola travel area, Avola is one of six communities in the North Thompson Valley visitor area. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District encompasses a range of landscapes: temperate inland rainforest areas in the upper North Thompson Valley, gently rolling grasslands in the Nicola Valley, and desert and semi-arid climates around Kamloops Lake. This diversity is part of the wider regional context.

The following activity examples also refer to the wider Thompson-Nicola area. The Blue River Trail Network offers year-round opportunities for walking, hiking, cycling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
