River, Ferry and Highway 24
The Little Fort Reaction Ferry crosses the North Thompson River. Fly fishing is possible on the North Thompson River near Little Fort; the nearby North Thompson River Provincial Park serves as a starting point for a gentle downstream paddle. The two activities therefore have different points of reference: the river near Little Fort and the nearby park. If the ferry is important to your plans, check the schedule in advance.
Highway 24 runs for 100 kilometres from 93 Mile House to Little Fort and is nicknamed the “Fishing Highway.”
Parks and Their Access
The two Eakin Creek parks differ in location and access. Eakin Creek Canyon Park is 5 km west of Little Fort, south of Highway 4. Its landscape features include a narrow rocky canyon with steep walls, natural tunnels, rock outcrops and a scenic 8-metre waterfall. The park has established populations of wild trout. There are no public roads or developed trails; access is only by self-guided exploration with a map and compass. Eakin Creek Floodplain Park is 15 km west of Little Fort and can be reached via a gravel road from Highway 24.
High Lakes Basin Park includes several medium-sized lakes with populations of wild trout. It can be accessed on foot or on horseback; simple, unmarked trails lead from nearby forest service roads. The park access options therefore vary: self-guided exploration with a map and compass at Eakin Creek Canyon, the gravel road to Floodplain Park, and access on foot or horseback to High Lakes Basin Park.
At Taweel Park, a network of trails connects a large lake with smaller lakes. Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are possible there, but there are no facilities.
Dunn Peak Park can be reached from Little Fort by ferry and a road off Highway 5. This is distinct from a user-created trail above Harper Creek on the east side of Dunn Peak.
Little Fort Fly & Tackle is listed at 136 Little Fort Highway as a retailer of fishing and hunting licences, as well as fishing supplies. If you plan to use the address for your fishing trip, check the latest information in advance.
