The Turner Lake Canoe Circuit is a three- to five-day canoe trip through a dramatic mountain landscape. The chain of lakes includes approximately 18 kilometres of lakes and 2.5 kilometres of rivers and streams. This makes the trip a distinct, multi-day option to consider when planning. Seasonal access details may change; check them before planning your trip.

Another option nearby is the Kettle Pond Trail: this easy 2-kilometre trail descends to a unique glacial depression called Kettle Pond. The trail combines a specific distance with a clearly named landscape destination.

Landscape and activities

The Belarko Wildlife Viewing Area is on Highway 20 and adjoins the Belarko Boat Launch. BC Parks and the Nuxalk Nation manage the area jointly. Its location and shared management are important points of reference for visiting the area around Stuie.

Hunlen Falls are a major attraction: the water plunges 260 metres before flowing into the Atnarko River. Fishing is also possible in nearby Tweedsmuir Park. Alongside the region’s rivers and lakes, the area offers a waterfall and a waterside activity.

Nuxalk history and local history

Stuie is located in the traditional territories of the Nuxalk Nation. In the past, the Nuxalkmc travelled upstream to Stuie in loaded canoes to trade and gather berries. Along the way, they rested and visited family in the various villages. This historical connection describes travel, exchange and family ties along the rivers.

Stuie Lodge is also part of the area’s history: Walker built it on his land in 1931. The lodge’s history and its location near the confluence of the two rivers shape Stuie’s historical character.
