Denny Island lies in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Its local history spans Old Bella Bella, former canneries and the air force base near Shearwater. At the same time, water activities, trails through wetlands and forests, and wildlife shape the visitor experience. This offers several starting points for planning your trip: historic sites, activities on land and water, and connections via Shearwater.

Local History and Cultural Context

Old Bella Bella is the original settlement site on the northwest side of Denny Island. The island lies within the traditional and unceded territory of the Heiltsuk Nation. During the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Air Force selected Denny Island as a reconnaissance base. The station near Shearwater included aircraft hangars, a hospital, administration buildings and accommodation for up to 1,000 people. Buildings and ruins remain from the former base, including abandoned aircraft wrecks; their condition may change.

The island’s industrial history adds another layer: in the 1920s and 1930s, Denny Island had two canneries that processed shellfish, abalone and salmon. Together with its historic use as a reconnaissance base, these canneries trace distinct chapters in the island’s history.
