The Northern Mariana Islands’ historical arc stretches from an ancient Chamorro stone structure to the political negotiations of the 1970s. Saipan, Tinian and Rota offer different points of connection: on Saipan, hospital history, museum exhibits and a scenic trail come together; Tinian and Rota add historic sites, caves and latte stones to the picture. Culinary festivals bring a seasonal perspective.

Saipan: Hospital History and Island Politics

The former Japanese Hospital on Saipan provided medical care to the island’s residents from 1926 until it was abandoned in 1944 during the Battle of Saipan. In 1974, the former hospital was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Its former medical use and its later listing in the register belong to different chapters in the building’s history.

The exhibits at the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture cover the settlement of the islands through the political negotiations of the 1970s, which led to the establishment of today’s U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Thus, alongside the history of a single building, the museum presents a broader chronology that also encompasses the creation of today’s Commonwealth.

Tinian and Rota: Structures, Caves and History

On Tinian, the House of Taga is an ancient Chamorro stone structure. North Field offers a different historical connection: the site was part of World War II history and was once the location of the Enola Gay. On Tinian, then, an ancient Chamorro structure and a site connected to wartime history represent distinctly different historical themes.

Rota brings together other distinct points of interest. The As Nieves Latte Stone Quarry consists of nine latte pillars and seven capstones at various stages of completion. The Chugai pictograph site features about ninety images painted on the walls of a natural cave. The stone formations and cave paintings thus differ both in their surroundings and in their form.

Tonga Cave adds a history of use to these architectural and pictorial themes: before concrete houses were built, Rota’s residents used the cave as a refuge during typhoons. This gives the site a different connection from the quarry and the cave with the wall paintings.

Culinary Festivals on Saipan and Tinian

On Saipan, the Taste of The Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden takes place every Saturday in May. On Tinian, the Pika Festival celebrates the island’s famous hot pepper, considered one of the hottest in the world. The two events offer different culinary highlights: one centers on a food festival with a beer garden, while the other focuses on a particular island pepper. If you plan your trip around either event, check the dates and details for the relevant year in advance.

Get Active at American Memorial Park

The 1.2-mile scenic trail at American Memorial Park on Saipan is suitable for walking, jogging, cycling, roller skating and skateboarding. The activities range from walking to those involving wheels or a board, giving you different ways to incorporate exercise into your travel plans. Check current conditions before your visit.
