Sluiskil combines a walking trail with distinctive landscape features, memorial sites, and a museum with a fire brigade collection. If you are planning a stay and looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you would rather spend your time walking, exploring local history, or both. The Sint-Antonius-van-Paduakerk and the Papeschorpolder nature area each add their own distinctive features.

The Ommetje Sluiskil and its route details

The Ommetje Sluiskil is a 5.91-kilometre walking trail in the Langs Linies en Kreken walking network. The route includes unpaved paths. Its length gives you a concrete point of reference for planning; information about the path surfaces helps you assess the character of the route without making any claim about its current condition.

One distinctive crossing uses the hand-pulled Sleurschuut to cross the western Rijkswaterleiding. If you are planning to use this crossing on your walk, check in advance whether it will be usable at your chosen time. This lets you keep this notable feature of the route in mind without basing your plans solely on an assumption that it is currently operating.

Along the Ommetje, in a meadow grazed by sheep, are two parallel earth embankments. Each is 100 metres long and represents a tunnel bore. Here, the bores run 17 metres below ground level and beneath the canal. So, in addition to its length, the route offers a tangible connection to the infrastructure beneath the landscape.

Monuments and local history

The Crash Monument is located at the intersection of Minister Lelyplein and Baljuwlaan. It commemorates French Lieutenant Erwin Emile Boudry, who died as a result of wartime hostilities on 17 September 1944. The monument includes a black natural-stone memorial stone with text and a photograph, an aircraft silhouette made of stainless steel, and an information panel made of the same material. The text, image, and silhouette give the commemoration several distinct visible forms.

Another memorial in Sluiskil, his birthplace, is a bust of Lodewijk van den Berg. Lodewijk van den Berg and his wife Jacqueline unveiled it on 31 May 2013. The bust complements the Crash Monument as a distinct memorial with a different personal dedication; the two sites represent different stories and should not be conflated as a single historical subject.

The Sint-Antonius-van-Paduakerk is also among the town’s named sights. It is a municipal monument, built in 1901 in the Neo-Romanesque style. For visitors interested in cultural history, the description of its style adds a specific architectural reference to the date.

Museum, nature area, and other activities

The Museum Sluiskil permanently houses Gerben Dijkstra’s distinctive fire brigade collection. Visitors can also take an optional guided tour. The collection and tour offer a different way to explore Sluiskil’s themes than the monuments and walking trail: here, the focus is on a collection devoted to a particular subject.

For physical activity, there is the PumpTrack Sluiskil in a sports park, where fitness and play equipment has also been installed. This distinguishes between two different types of activity: a designated walking route and the pump track in the sports park. Information about these facilities does not automatically guarantee opening hours or their suitability for individual visitors.

The 32-hectare Papeschorpolder nature area is located near Sluiskil, between Sas van Gent and Sluiskil. Its landscape includes a creek with slightly brackish water and an island for breeding birds. This offers a distinct nature-focused option alongside Sluiskil’s memorial sites, museum, and activities.
