Terneuzen offers a range of experiences: ships and locks on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal, museums exploring school and industrial history, natural areas and regional specialities. When planning your trip, you can start by deciding whether you would prefer to focus on ship spotting, culture, activities on the water or seasonal cuisine.

Ships, locks and waterside views

At Portaal van Vlaanderen, visitors can learn about ships and locks and try their hand at being a captain. This maritime visitor experience is connected to the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. A tour of the Nieuwe Sluis includes a visit to the 18-metre-deep bridge basement and offers another practical insight into the world of locks.

If you arrive in Terneuzen via the lock complex, there are two bridges at each lock, so you do not have to wait for a bridge to open. If this approach is important to your plans, check the practical information before setting off.

The kilometre-long Scheldeboulevard runs along the dike between the Western Scheldt and Terneuzen. It is popular with walkers, cyclists and ship spotters. The Schelde Informatie Punt is located at the Westpier, offering particularly close-up views of ships. The promenade on Kanaaleiland is also a special place to watch ships on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal from close by. Swimming, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, boat fishing, boating and canoeing are all possible at Otheense Kreek; there is also a circular recreational walking route, Rondje Kreek.

Museums exploring school, industry and flax

Museum Schooltijd is housed in a listed former bank building on Nieuwstraat in Terneuzen. Ir. Mertens designed the building in 1919 in the Amsterdam School style. At the museum, you can see old school materials and related objects. Here, the history of a distinctive building meets a collection connected to everyday school life.

Industrieel Museum Zeeland is housed in a monumental sugar warehouse in Sas van Gent. It presents imposing machinery and explores technological progress, safety, energy and logistics in an interactive way. Museum ’t Vlasschuurken, by contrast, focuses on the history of flax processing, presented in the setting of a traditional Zeeuws-Vlaamse flax-breaking shed. The three museums each have a different focus: school materials, industry and machinery, and flax processing.

Nature, activities and regional cuisine

The Canisvliet nature area near Westdorpe covers 42 hectares. Visitor centre De Baeckermat in Westdorpe offers a different way to explore nature, focusing on the connections between nature, the environment and agriculture. If you would like to plan outings using maps, the Tourist Information Point sells walking and cycling route maps, as well as town maps.

The activities at Otheense Kreek and Vliegende Vaart also differ in focus. Several water-based activities are available at the creek, while Vliegende Vaart offers swimming lessons, recreational swimming, lane swimming, aqua jogging and snorkelling. This lets you choose between leisure on the water and specific swimming activities when planning your trip.

Zuiddorpe is a centre of Zeeuws-Vlaamse asparagus growing. In May and June, restaurants serve locally grown asparagus. Philippine is known for mussels: during mussel season, restaurants serve fresh Zeeland mussels. The annual Mosselfeesten combine mussels with music, markets and mussel-opening demonstrations. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

More discoveries and choosing your accommodation

On the “De vliegende Hollander” Parelroute, participants answer questions and collect letters. There are also remains of forts around Koewacht, which belong to the Staats-Spaanse Linies. These offer other points of interest: a route with questions and letters, or historical traces in the surrounding area.

If you are looking for a hotel in Terneuzen, plan your trip around the experiences that matter most to you: ship spotting and locks, museums, activities on the water or regional cuisine. The places and themes mentioned give you a range of starting points for your trip. To plan specific journeys, use the place names to map out your route.
