Kortgene on Lake Veere
Accommodation in Kortgene
Kortgene is located on Lake Veere, a nature area and water sports paradise. When planning your trip, the town combines activities on the water with various cycling options. There are also historical points of interest: the Voorstraat street layout typical of Noord-Beveland, the Dorpskerk and the De Korenbloem grain mill. If you are looking for a hotel in Kortgene, these different interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Cycling around Lake Veere
The two cycling routes have different profiles. “Rond het Veerse Meer” is 54.5 kilometres long and goes around the lake. During the summer season, the tourist ferry between Kortgene and Wolphaartsdijk can be used; many cyclists take it to complete or shorten the circuit. As the ferry operates seasonally, check its current operating dates before your trip. The 36-kilometre “Ontdek Noord-Beveland” route follows the contours of the island and passes through Kortgene. It is 18.5 kilometres shorter than the circuit around the lake. This gives you two routes with different profiles: a circuit around Lake Veere and a route across the island that passes through Kortgene.
Water sports and rentals
The connection with the water is also practical: in Kortgene, Jachthaven Delta Marina offers boats and bicycles for rent, among other things. This means there are options both for activities on the water and for cycling trips. As services offered by operators can change, check the current rental options before your trip.
Town history and layout
The Voorstraat street layout typical of villages on Noord-Beveland is clearly evident in Kortgene. At the same time, in the Middle Ages Kortgene was the only place on Noord-Beveland with town rights, and it was first mentioned as a town in 1431. These details connect two aspects: its town rights place Kortgene in the island’s medieval history, while the Voorstraat layout is a feature of the townscape.
The history of the Dorpskerk
The history of the Dorpskerk spans several periods. During the storm surges around 1530, only the church tower remained standing. Construction of the present church began in 1684; the nave was completely rebuilt in 1686. The pulpit dates from 1625, after the storm surges and before construction began. The dates 1684 and 1686 refer to different building works: the start of construction of the present church and the complete rebuilding of the nave. More than 150 years lie between the storm surges around 1530 and the start of construction in 1684.
De Korenbloem grain mill
Located on Molendijk in Kortgene, De Korenbloem is a round stone gallery windmill built in 1873. Its sail span is 21.74 metres. The sail span indicates the diameter of the circle traced by the sails; it is therefore not the height of the mill. The 1873 construction date adds a distinctly later period alongside the medieval history of the town and the building phases of the church.
