At Fort aan de Buursteeg, a walk of about 2.5 kilometres combines nature with traces of the area’s defensive history. Along the route are preserved Dutch and German bunkers, reconstructed trenches and a shelter for anti-tank guns. Check the route’s access information before your visit.

The fort is also home to the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre, between Veenendaal, Renswoude and Ederveen. It tells the story of the waterline, which played a role in the country’s defence for centuries.

A walk through Veenendaal’s history

The Monumentenrondje in Veenendaal is seven kilometres long and can be explored on foot, by bike, scooter or skates, or by running. It highlights peat, wool, cigars and steel as four pillars of the town’s development. Visitors can also join a guided tour of a mill with a miller as part of the walk. Check in advance whether the tour is being offered.

The De Klomp Station Route is about five kilometres long and runs from Veenendaal-De Klomp station to the town centre. Along the way, it links nature, history, and old and new industries. The Veense Ommetjes programme comprises eight routes of approximately five to six kilometres, in Veenendaal or its surroundings. This gives you a choice of distances: about 2.5 kilometres at the fort, around five on the Station Route, about five to six on the Ommetjes and seven on the Monumentenrondje.

Town museum and historic mills

The Stadsmuseum Veenendaal brings the town’s history to life through exhibits, modern multitouch tables and images, linking the past, present and future. Its historical story spans everything from the old peat barges to wool and cigar factories and the present day. Every year, the museum hosts various temporary exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and other activities. Check the current agenda to help plan your visit. The VVV Veenendaal information centre is located in the Stadsmuseum museum shop; check the current opening hours before your visit.

De Nieuwe Molen is a round, stone wind-powered grain and post mill dating from 1911. It was built to replace an earlier post mill of the same name and can be visited on Saturdays. Check the latest information before your visit. Built in 1872, De Vriendschap is a post grain mill where flour is still milled using traditional craftsmanship. It is a special heritage site where everyone is welcome.

Cycling routes, nature and regional experiences

The Rondje Gelderse Vallei cycling route is 35.7 kilometres long and runs through the wooded countryside and inland areas around Veenendaal. Check the latest route information before setting out. Veenendaal lies between the two large natural areas of Kwintelooijen and Prattenburg; both are outside the immediate town area.

In the experience gardens at De Eekhoeve, visitors can pick or cut their own flowers, vegetables and fruit. This activity is seasonal. Landwinkel De Eekhoeve and the “Bij Kees & Sien” tea house offer high teas and farm tastings. You can also try the local product Veens Kaatje at the De Eekhoeve farm shop. Check booking details for the activities and product availability before your visit.
