Driebergen-Rijsenburg offers a variety of options for a stay: gardens, forest paths, historic village scenery and a cycling tour that starts and ends in the village. When choosing what to visit, you can focus on plants and gardening, take a walk or visit a place of cultural and historical interest. Each place has its own character—from the Heidetuin, which is easily accessible for wheelchair users, to the group tour of Kasteel Sterkenburg, which is available by arrangement.

Gardens and woodland

The Heidetuin is a sunny forest clearing with individual trees, shrubs, winding waterways and bridges, and plenty of heather. It is easily accessible for wheelchair users. The open clearing is very different from the formal garden and park at Sparrendaal, whose avenues and other landscaped features offer a different kind of scenery.

The Tuinen van Kraaybeekerhof include a pick-your-own garden, a nursery with a flower-picking garden, a food forest, an herb garden, a seasonal tea garden and a country estate shop. The Kraaybeekerhof estate is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset; the tea garden is seasonal. The three-course Thursday evening menu “Proef de Tuin” is served with fresh produce from the garden. Between the main course and dessert, guests are taken on a tour of the vegetable garden and food forest. The menu thus combines a meal with a walk through two garden areas.

The historic garden and park at Sparrendaal retains its formal avenue layout and waterway system. Other features include a beech hedge along the northwestern boundary, a curved wall and a forecourt. Sparrendaal was built by former Utrecht mayor Jacob van Berck on the site of a 17th-century farm. The estate’s design and history therefore offer two different points of interest for visitors.

Kasteel Sterkenburg is at the heart of an estate and is surrounded by a coach house, a gardener’s house, a park and a garden. More than 15 years of extensive mowing around the castle have created herb-rich meadows. Private guided tours of Kasteel Sterkenburg for adults and children can be arranged for groups of ten or more.

The Seminarieterrein is part of the Rijsenburgse Bos, where you can walk along its impressive avenues. Mountain biking is permitted on the paved cycle path in the Rijsenburgse Bos, and the woodland is easily accessible for wheelchair users. The walks along the avenues and the permitted mountain biking on the cycle path are clearly assigned to different areas or paths.

Local history and special places

The historic center of Rijsenburg is designated as a protected village streetscape. Kerkplein is a semicircular square lined with workers’ houses dating from the Napoleonic era. The Church of St. Peter in Chains was also built on Kerkplein for members of the Catholic faith. The shape of the square, the houses and the church offer different ways to understand the village’s history on a walk.

The Driebergse Lourdesgrot was built about 120 years ago on the grounds of the former Grootseminarie Rijsenburg. It is a Marian chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary and is used as a place for conversation, spirituality and lighting candles. The grotto is freely accessible. Its religious character sets it apart from the garden and woodland destinations, while its history also connects it with the former seminary site.

Walks and cycling tour

For a longer bike ride, the 32-kilometer Castle tour Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Kromme Rijnstreek starts and ends at TOP Station Driebergen-Zeist in Driebergen-Rijsenburg. It follows the cycle junction network, passing through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and part of the Kromme Rijnstreek. Along the way, the route passes castles, estates and museums. Having the same start and finish point makes the station a reference point for the tour. At the stated distance, it is a standalone cycling option alongside walks along the avenues of the Seminarieterrein.
