Utrechtse Heuvelrug: Forests, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Forests and heathland, historic country estates and distinctive buildings give Utrechtse Heuvelrug its varied character. The municipality is partly located in Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Trails in the municipality lead through forest and heathland and past castles and country estates. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to first decide what your trip will focus on: nature trails, cultural attractions or a mix of both.
Hiking among forest, heathland and water
Near Doorn lie the Kaapse Bossen, an extensive woodland area for hiking, with forest paths, historic church paths and stately beech avenues. A five-kilometre hiking route passes the Doornse kei, the historic stone table and the De Kaap observation tower. Check the trail markers and access conditions before setting out.
The Leersumse Plassen are located in the Leersumse Veld. A herd of Piedmontese cattle grazes on the heathland; at the third body of water, there is a bird-watching hut and opportunities for quiet walks. Conditions for observing wildlife vary by season. Heemtuin Leersum, also known as De Londotuin, showcases a wide variety of native plants on their respective soil types. Tours are regularly offered for members and interested visitors; check visiting hours in advance.
Swimming and activities by the water are the focus at Henschotermeer: this recreational area in the forests of Utrechtse Heuvelrug has a sandy beach and swimming facilities. A paved footpath almost 2,500 metres long runs around the lake; marked walking and cycling routes are available in the surrounding area. Beach games, play lawns, play mounds and a wooden pirate ship add to the recreational facilities. Doornse Gat is also a freely accessible recreational area, with grassy areas, sand mounds, play equipment and picnic spots. Check local conditions before visiting.
Routes with different points of interest
At Landgoed Zuylestein, a 3.5-kilometre audio trail takes about 50 minutes and leads through the history of the estate. The Godard-Bentinckroute is longer, at around 9.8 kilometres, and introduces the cultural and natural values of the landscape. Comparing the two routes gives you options with different durations, distances and themes.
The Amerongs Historisch Museum explains tobacco cultivation using original tools, historic photographs and interactive displays. In 2025, the museum shifted its focus from tobacco cultivation to a broader account of Amerongen’s history. Bloemencorso Leersum is a long-running annual tradition held on the third weekend of August. If the event affects your travel plans, check the date for the relevant year.
Country estates, museums and history
Kasteel Amerongen is associated with the abdication of German Emperor Wilhelm II, which he signed there in 1918. Tours explore the castle’s long history; visitors can see authentic interiors and works of art that have been carefully preserved for 350 years. The gardens can be visited independently of the castle. Check visiting options in advance.
Huis Doorn is a museum in a former imperial residence in exile; its original interior furnishings have been preserved. The 35-hectare park was laid out in the English landscape style. In summer, Huis Doorn offers the family treasure hunt “Het geheim van de Keizer”. Check whether this seasonal activity is available during your travel dates. In Doorn, the Maartenskerk is considered the oldest church in the province of Utrecht: a wooden church or chapel already stood on this site around 885, and the tower was added around 1250.
The historic garden and park of the Sterkenburg estate has largely retained its layout and details and is designed in the landscape style. Wet woodlands, meadows, open water and large, partly monumental trees make the estate a diverse natural area. At Parc Broekhuizen, you can combine a walk in nature with a culinary experience; the estate brings together heritage, modern design and gastronomy.
Seasonal activities can also influence when you travel: Bosbad Leersum is a naturally heated outdoor pool filled with spring water and organises activities for all ages during the swimming season. Check whether any activities are scheduled for your travel dates. De Weistaar has a 16-hole mini boeren-golf course suitable for children and adults.
