Montfoort lies on the Hollandsche IJssel. When choosing a hotel in Montfoort, it is worth considering the themes that may shape your stay: medieval architecture, art, a mill and waterways. Kasteel Montfoort and the IJsselpoort represent different aspects of the city’s history, while De Knoperij, Galerie Montfoort and Molen De Valk offer further cultural highlights. For a walk, there is also the Waterlinieommetje Montfoort.

City history between castle and mill

Kasteel Montfoort was originally built in the Middle Ages on the edge of the city centre. It was constructed between 1156 and 1178 to protect the Diocese of Utrecht from the Count of Holland. The grounds include an authentic gateway and an old moat. After the French destroyed the castle in 1672, it was demolished apart from the outer bailey. The sequence of its medieval defensive purpose and later destruction shows how much the complex changed over the course of history.

The IJsselpoort is Montfoort’s only surviving city gate. The former commandery of the Knights Hospitaller included a chapel with a cloister. Molen De Valk stands on the old city wall and has been a prominent landmark there since 1753. The gate, religious complex, castle and mill represent different chapters in the city’s history, each offering a different historical point of reference from which to view Montfoort.

Museum and art

At the De Knoperij city museum, historical objects, works of art and documents tell the story of Montfoort. Admission is free, and De Knoperij also serves as a tourist information centre. For orientation, the venue combines an insight into the city’s history with tourist information.

Galerie Montfoort is located in the basement of the former town hall and displays works by its two gallery directors and other artists. Individual exhibitions may change. The museum and gallery have different focuses: the city museum conveys Montfoort’s history through various media, while the gallery presents works by the participating artists.

Mill and waterways

Molen De Valk connects its historic association with the city wall to the craft of milling. Experienced millers are there on Saturdays and are happy to show visitors around the mill. The shop stocks flour and mixes for bread, cakes and biscuits. A guided tour and a visit to the shop offer different ways to explore the mill.

At the Oude Sluis, a different role of water takes centre stage: the lock provides access from the Hollandsche IJssel to the Montfoortse Vaart. Together with Montfoort’s location on the Hollandsche IJssel, this creates a direct link between the river and the local waterway. The edge of Stadspark Montfoort also offers a view of the historic city wall.

Guided tours and walks

For a guided perspective on the old town, volunteer guides offer tours of the historic centre on request. The Waterlinieommetje Montfoort is a 2.5 km walking route. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Another way to find your bearings is the Monumentenroute Montfoort: a brochure with information about the monuments is available from TIP De Knoperij. The tour, walking route and brochure differ in format and preparation: you can request a guided tour, plan for the length of the walking route or learn about the monuments using the brochure.
