Linschoten can be discovered through two distinct highlights: the countryside around Landgoed Linschoten and the historic village centre with its architectural history. Paths through the surrounding area, guided tours and occasional seasonal activities offer different ways to plan your stay.

Estate and countryside

Landgoed Linschoten covers more than 500 hectares and is the largest continuous estate within the Randstad. Its landscape includes a country house with a park, waterways, monumental farmhouses, meadows and woods. The estate is a protected nature area; plants that grow there include wild garlic, lords-and-ladies, star-of-Bethlehem and wild hyacinths.

Several walking trails cross the estate, passing Huis te Linschoten and Parkbos. Huis te Linschoten was built in 1637 as a fortified house with a moat and drawbridge. It can be visited every two years on Heritage Open Days; check that year’s programme for details. Concerts have been held at Huis te Linschoten since the 1990s, now also in spring and autumn. Check the dates of individual concerts before your trip.

Village centre and architectural history

The centre of Linschoten is designated a Rijksbeschermd dorpsgezicht, or state-protected village landscape, and is of particular importance to the history of the surrounding area. The Grote or Sint-Janskerk may originally have been founded as a chapel at nearby Linschoten Castle; the castle has been gone for centuries. The church tower portal features wall paintings of a Benedictine cross and a unicorn.

Guided tours also explore the historic village centre. They start at De Ballensnoeperij, where you can book a tour. Check the booking details before your visit. A tour is a way to connect the village’s history with its buildings and streets.

Paths through the village and polder

De Ballensnoeperij has developed two walking routes of different lengths and with different highlights: a 1.5-kilometre route through the village centre and a 5.3-kilometre route through the countryside around Linschoten. If you would like to use the routes, confirm their availability in advance.

The Strick en de Roover walking route runs between Montfoort and Linschoten, following raised paths and embankments through the wide polder landscape, past old farmhouses. In Linschoten, it passes numerous bridges and kwakels, flanked by monumental buildings, including the leaning tower of Sint-Janskerk. Another option is the 12.5-kilometre Engherkaderoute: it follows grass embankments through the Snelrewaard polder to Linschoten, then returns to Montfoort along the Montfoortse Vaart. Most of the route follows unpaved paths; surface conditions may change.

The Linschoten section of the QR Fit- en Beleefroute is 3.7 kilometres long and offers a free way to exercise outdoors. Activity stations are accessed via QR codes; check the facilities and conditions on site. Its QR stations set this route apart from the walking routes through the village centre and surrounding countryside.

Seasonal visits and information

During the summer season, boat trips on the Avontuur run weekly on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to approximately 3:30 p.m. Check the dates and availability in advance. Another seasonal attraction is the Proeftuin van Linschoten: in 2026, it welcomes visitors from April through November, Tuesday to Sunday, from sunrise to sunset. It is also advisable to check the details before setting out.

The Proeftuin is a pick-your-own garden in an old orchard. Vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown there without pesticides or artificial fertilisers. There is also a farm shop selling regional products, as well as coffee and tea. In June 2026, the visitor information service moved to the Theekoepel. During its opening hours, De Ballensnoeperij provides visitors with historical and tourist information; check its current location before your visit.
