Develpark is located on an island in the Devel and was designed in 1962 as an example of strictly modernist postwar planning. Nature reserves and waterways also shape the landscape of Zwijndrecht beyond this park. Develbos lies along the former Devel stream and offers opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding. Around 200 tree species grow in the Munnike Park Arboretum. De Hooge Nesse is a 72-hectare area between the Oude Maas and Lindtsedijk in Zwijndrecht. Waalbos, in turn, is an open area along the former course of the Waal River.

Cycle and walking routes with different highlights

The 55-kilometre Drechtsteden Cycle Route starts at Lindtsedijk in Zwijndrecht and passes the De Munnikendevel and Develbos nature reserves. The Zwijndrecht–Barendrecht route takes a different course: it runs through Zwijndrecht past Noordpark, the Oude Maas and Veerplein, then continues along Lindtsedijk to the De Hooge Nesse recreation area. The Zwijndrecht–Biesbosch route starts at Veerweg 10 in Zwijndrecht. Check the route details before setting off.

The shorter routes offer different experiences too: the Kidsbeweegroute Hooge Nesse is a walking route with interesting information and movement activities. The Waalpad, by contrast, is an educational nature cycle route between the village of Heerjansdam and the local swimming pool. This gives you two distinct options: a walking route with activities and a cycling link.

Sculptures, buildings and local culture

Noordpark lies on the riverbank at the Drierivierenpunt and offers views of Dordrecht. It was turned into a sculpture park in 1996. A numbered sculpture route runs through the Zwijndrecht area from the Waterbus stop via Veerplein and Maaspad to Noordpark. It connects the artworks with several named locations by the river.

A prominent landmark in the local landscape is the Zwijndrecht Water Tower: built in 1897, it stands 41 metres tall and is an eclectic brick structure with a 220 m³ iron reservoir. Korenmolen Landzicht dates from 1868 and was used for grinding grain for almost a century. De Kersenboom Mill is located in Waalbos on the Waal River.

KunZt is an exhibition space in the Old Town Hall of the Municipality of Zwijndrecht. It is a place for exhibitions, workshops, inspiration and meeting others; the exhibition programme may change. The Zwijndrecht Historical Association uses De Vergulde Swaen to manage its collection, set up exhibitions and organise talks. Programmes and dates can also change, so it is worth checking the latest information in advance.

Explore Develpark and the riverbank

Parkboerderij De Kiboe-hoeve is located in Develpark next to the swimming pool and the Devel waterway. Visitors can see, touch and learn about various animal species there. There is a playground with a variety of play equipment for young children. The animals and facilities may change. Also in Develpark, Sportcomplex De Hoge Devel offers recreational swimming, lane swimming and swimming lessons. As swimming pool construction work is ongoing, check the current status of the facilities before visiting.

The Zwijndrecht Veerplein Waterbus stop is on an appealing stretch of riverbank. Operator information from August 2026 lists line 22 as serving the stop and notes that bicycles can be taken on board free of charge. Check the timetable and bicycle conditions before travelling, as both may change.

A nearby addition: Sophiapolder

Near Zwijndrecht, the 77-hectare tidal nature island of Sophiapolder lies in the Noord near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. A free passenger ferry, operated by volunteer skippers, takes visitors to and from the island. The ferry runs seasonally; check access information before your trip. Alternatively, bus line 88 goes to the Laan van Walburg stop, from where the island can be reached on foot in a little over ten minutes.

You can walk through the tidal landscape along boardwalks and paths. Walking conditions may vary depending on the weather and water level. The 12-kilometre Sophiapolder Route starts at Veerplein and follows the banks of the Oude Maas and Noord. For cyclists, the 24.31-kilometre Sophiapolder Cycle Route near Zwijndrecht passes a freshwater tidal area. A small ferry to Sophiapolder is often used by birdwatchers.
