Six large recreation areas are located in and around Zoetermeer. At the same time, protected townscapes, the history of the polders and a wide range of leisure activities shape the area. Visitors to Zoetermeer can explore its historic features, landscapes and waterways, or enjoy sports and cultural activities.

Historic Townscapes and Polder History

Dorpsstraat is a protected townscape with a historic village centre and a well-preserved network of streets, waterways and green spaces. A 3.9-kilometre architecture walk starts at the Stadhuis RandstadRail stop. Along the way, it passes municipal and national monuments beside the Buurtvaart, two dobbe ponds and several bridges. Voorweg is also protected and is considered Zoetermeer’s best-preserved historic polder row. In Meerzicht, white houses with orange cupolas define the protected Koepeltjesbuurt neighbourhood.

Meerpolder is also a protected townscape. It is the oldest reclaimed polder in Rijnland and is considered an outstanding heritage area. It is linked to Zoetermeer’s historic reputation as a butter village—a chapter of local history that speaks to the polder tradition beyond its individual buildings.

A prominent monument is Molen De Hoop, a Rijksmonument (national monument) that is more than 100 years old. Free guided tours are available every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.: visitors are taken up the mill and can enjoy the view from the gallery. As the schedule may change, check tour availability before your visit. In the so-called “Old Five” vote, residents chose the mill as the city’s second-most important monument. Zoetermeer also regularly hosts Open Monumentendag. On the Saturday of the second weekend in September, historic buildings and sites open to visitors; participating places and specific dates vary from year to year.

Water, Green Spaces and Trails

At Noord Aa, there is a designated swimming area with shallow water and grassy areas by the water. Possible activities include swimming, diving, windsurfing and kitesurfing, as well as canoeing, dragon boating and sailing; walking, cycling and inline skating are also possible. If you plan to swim, check the water quality and bathing suitability before your visit. Zoetermeerse Watersportvereniging Noord-Aa offers sailing courses for young people and adults, from beginner to advanced level. Course times and registration requirements vary by season.

In Zoetermeer, Nieuwe Driemanspolder borders Westerpark and Buytenpark. It has a nature playground with climbing equipment made from untreated wood and small water play areas. In Westerpark, a nature garden of around two hectares recreates a variety of landscapes: a small polder, dikes, a sawa and fields.

De Balijhoeve has a playground for young children and a nature playground where children can, among other things, build huts from branches and swing. From there, you can walk straight into Balijbos. De Balijhoeve favours Dutch and traditional Dutch breeds because they have great cultural and historical value and their preservation should be supported. At De Weidemolen, older children can find an adventure trail with a water play area, logs and stepping stones. The grounds also include an herb garden, a berry garden and an orchard. De Weidemolen is next to Bentwoud, a nature and recreation area between Zoetermeer, Waddinxveen and Boskoop.

Those who want to go mountain biking in Buytenpark will find a challenging trail of more than five kilometres, as well as a shorter trail for children. Walking, horse riding and boating are also possible in Buytenpark. The two mountain bike trails therefore differ not only in length but also in the audiences they are designed for.

Sports and Culture for Different Interests

SnowWorld Zoetermeer has four slopes, ten ski lifts and real snow. The facility has Europe’s steepest indoor slope; following its expansion in 2016, the steep slopes are 300 metres long. SilverDome adds to the ice sports offering with public skating, disco skating and skating lessons. Pickleball and workshops are also available there. Seasonal availability and individual programmes may change.

Cultural attractions also cater to different interests. Kunstgarage Franx is a contemporary art exhibition space in a historic garage. Its changing exhibitions focus on local talent and experimental art by young artists. Poppodium Boerderij is a music venue that attracts visitors from the region, the Netherlands and abroad. At the Nationaal Videogame Museum, you can play more than 1,000 different games from today and across several decades. The collection and visitor offerings may evolve; if you have a particular reason for visiting, check what is currently available in advance.

Whether you want to centre your stay on polder history and architecture, outdoor activities, or sports and culture, Zoetermeer offers a range of themes to explore. You can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
