Papendrecht: River Landscape, Art and Local History
Accommodation in Papendrecht
Papendrecht lies on the Merwede. Wildlife watching, public art and a river landscape shaped over centuries give the municipality its varied character. Those exploring Papendrecht on foot or by bike can choose routes with different focuses; museums, a theatre and a collection of historic engines add to the experience.
Routes for Nature, Art and Exercise
The Natuurroute leads to 22 notable plant and animal species found in the municipality. A free route map guides you to several locations throughout the municipality; you can follow the route on foot or by bike. Along the way, you can scan QR codes, watch short videos and answer quiz questions. Before setting out, check whether the route is available and whether a printed map can be obtained; the digital features may also change.
The “Along Water, Art and History” walking route is 8.5 kilometres long. If you plan around the distance, this gives you a specific measure. One walking route follows the Beneden Merwede, where Papendrecht’s first houses were built.
Outdoor Works of Art
More than 40 works of art can be found in the municipality’s streets and squares. Kunst voor Papendrecht offers a cycling and walking route that takes in the artworks. This lets you explore public art along a route, choosing between two ways of getting around.
Beeldenpark Drechtoevers is a permanent exhibition of large sculptures on the banks of the Oude Maas, the Beneden Merwede and the Noord. It was designed as a living museum of large sculptures along the river corridor. QR codes on the information boards provide details about the sculptures and their artists. Individual sculptures may change over time.
River Landscape and History
The municipality describes the Dijklint as the origin of Papendrecht. The dikes along the rivers are part of the historic maritime landscape and tell 900 years of history. The waterways and dikes are therefore not just local landmarks, but also part of the town’s historic character. The Papendrecht section of the Alblasserbos is in the Vriesenpolder.
A late-medieval huisterp is located on Edelweisslaan. A Marechaussee barracks was built on the west side of Veerdam in 1920. These places represent different historical periods; the year provides a point of reference for dating the barracks, while the huisterp dates to the late Middle Ages.
Museum, Theatre and Special Collections
The small gallery at the Dorpsbehoud Museum includes the old clock mechanism from the Grote Kerk. The Lancasterzaal contains documents and objects from 1944 relating to the crash of the “Popeye” bomber and its crew.
