Warmond – protected village scene and Huys te Warmont
Accommodation in Warmond
Warmond offers several clear points of interest for a stay: the protected village centre, the Huys te Warmont estate and several named walking routes. These highlights are distinctly different and can help you organise your plans for your time here.
Village centre and Huys te Warmont estate
The Dutch government has designated the centre of Warmond as a protected village scene. The historic village centre contains estates, monumental farmhouses, former schools, inns, churches and the old town hall. The protected status applies to the centre; Huys te Warmont is a separate point of interest in a landscape setting.
The foundations of the castle-like Huys te Warmont date from the twelfth or thirteenth century. The Huys is part of Hollandse Duinen National Park. The estate covers 23 hectares: you can walk among yews and swamp cypresses, along old oak avenues and beside the stately Huys. Noctule bats live in hollow, living oaks and beeches; one of the largest colonies of noctule bats known in the Netherlands is found there. If you would like to take in the wildlife as well as the architectural heritage, the colony offers a specific connection with nature.
Walking routes and getting around
Landgoedwandelen: Warmond offers two possible walking distances. The route is eight kilometres long and can be shortened to three kilometres. It is signposted using the junction network and can be started at any junction you choose. The Zwanburgerroute starts and ends in the old village of Warmond. This fixed connection with the old village sets it apart from the estate route, which can be started at any junction. Several walking and cycling routes have also been developed in and around Warmond.
The nearest railway station is Sassenheim. From there, you can walk to Warmond via junctions 47–41–40; the distance is 1.7 km. This information helps answer two different route-planning questions: 1.7 km is the distance from the station; eight or three kilometres are the lengths of the estate route. You can reach the Natuur Ontdekking Centrum Koudenhoorn from the Gemeentehaven in Warmond by crossing the bridge to the Koudenhoorn recreational island.
Paddling, markets and local history
You can explore the area around Warmond by canoe or SUP, paddling through the village and along small farm ditches in the polders. Markets may also affect your choice of dates. A market is held in Warmond every Saturday, and themed markets are also held regularly. If a market is important to your travel plans, check the latest dates in advance, as schedules may change.
In the past, many farmers in Warmond made cheese, butter and other dairy products.
