A stay in Voorhout can be planned from several perspectives: walks in the public Het Overbosch, hiking trails through the surrounding area, and the seasonal blooms of the bulb fields offer different points of focus. In spring, tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths shape the landscape around the town; in autumn, dahlia colors are added. There are also stories of a former country estate, a mill, and an inhabited vicarage. If you are looking for a hotel, this mix can help you decide in advance whether your trip will focus mainly on nature, routes, or cultural history.

A Park with a History of Its Own

Het Overbosch is the last surviving remnant of the former Schoonoord country estate in Voorhout. Today, it is a public park for walking. At around 2.5 hectares, the park is located in Voorhout in the triangle between the Leidse Vaart and the Rijnsburgerweg. Its former role as a country estate and its current use as a walking park give Het Overbosch both a historical and a contemporary character.

The Mill and Local History

The De Hoop Doet Leven mill was moved to the Elsgeesterpolder in August 1999 and officially put back into operation there on November 11, 2000. Since then, it can often be seen turning and grinding. The two dates mark different stages: first the move, then the resumption of operations. This means the mill’s history can be traced not only through a building, but also through its visible work.

The Boerhaavehuis is the inhabited vicarage of the Protestant congregation of Voorhout. A guided tour of the Boerhaavetuin can be arranged for groups by prior agreement. If you plan to take such a tour, confirm the current details in advance.

Walking Routes to Suit Your Interests and Distance

Rundje Voorhout consists of three walking routes through the area around Voorhout. They pass parks, sports fields, monuments, and bulb fields. One route runs through parks in Voorhout, including Oosthoutpark, Park Molentocht, and Park Wilgenhorst. If you are specifically looking for parks, these names offer concrete points of reference; the other features mentioned show the range of the routes.

For walks between Voorhout station and Hillegom station, distances of 10, 13, 16, and 19 kilometers are given. Their starting and ending points are easily accessible by public transport. The different distances give you options to suit your preferred length. Check current public transport connections before setting out, as conditions may change.

Blooming Seasons Throughout the Year

In spring, blooming tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths create a colorful mosaic of bulb fields around Voorhout. In autumn, dahlias bring additional seasonal color. One specific option for seeing dahlias is the show garden at De Tulperij: it was created in collaboration with CNB and growers from the region, and more than 600 dahlia varieties bloom there from August to October. In the picking garden, visitors can put together their own dahlia bouquet.

There are therefore two different seasonal experiences to consider when choosing your dates: in spring, several bulb flower species shape the fields around Voorhout; from August to October, dahlias take center stage in the show garden. If you especially want to see the dahlias or put together a bouquet, plan your travel dates for this period.
