Katwijk: Waterways and Local History
Accommodation in Katwijk
With its historic waterways, buildings and Heerenschoolbos, Katwijk aan den Rijn offers tangible points of interest for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Katwijk, these local features can help you plan your visit: they range from the history of the town centre to how a grain mill works.
Waterways and Local History
The Kanaal naar de zee runs north of the town centre of Katwijk aan den Rijn and leads to the Haarlemmertrekvaart and Haarlemmermeer. The Vliet is also part of the local topography. The historic waterways to and from Katwijk aan den Rijn were important for transporting auction goods, including vegetables, via Rijnsburg and Valkenburg. They were primarily oriented towards Leiden. The waterways therefore represent not only the landscape, but also former trade routes and the town’s links with its surrounding area.
Town Centre and Historic Functions
The Overrijn is an essential part of the old town centre. Katwijk aan den Rijn was first mentioned in the 13th century. The townscape therefore brings together a specific part of the historic centre and an early reference point in the town’s history. One of the historic buildings is De Roskam, first mentioned in 1560. The building served as a resting place for travellers, where horses could be stabled and cared for. It was also used as a courthouse and town hall. These functions link the history of travel with public life and the administration of justice.
Churches and the History of Milling
The Dorpskerk contains a tomb monument commissioned by Maria van Reygersbergh for Willem II baron van Liere. It was completed in 1663. The Dorpskerk’s Rococo organ was built in 1765 by Pieter Assendelft, an organ builder from Leiden. Another trace of the area’s church history is the present-day H. Joannes de Doper (Geboorte) Church, which dates from 1911.
Molen De Geregtigheid links local history with milling technology. The miller Hendrik van der Muele built the present-day windmill in 1740. It is a Rijksmonument, is still capable of milling and turns regularly. At the mill, you can learn about how a grain mill works and the history of Katwijk aan den Rijn. Alongside the historical facts, the craft and operation of a mill are also central themes.
Heerenschoolbos and Historic Walks
The park belonging to De Wilbert has been called Heerenschoolbos since 1831. This centuries-old, secluded green area in Katwijk aan den Rijn contains old garden and park ornaments, ponds with groups of figures, and the Begraafplaats van Katholieke Geestelijken. At the end of the central avenue, on the shore of the large pond, stands a river-god statue: it is often called Neptunus, but actually depicts Rhenus Pater. The difference between the familiar name and the figure actually depicted is a striking detail in the park’s history.
Several times a year, the Historisch Genootschap Het Rijndorp organises historic walks in Katwijk aan den Rijn on various themes. During the Najaarsfeesten in August 2025, an approximately two-hour historic walk passed historic sites and started at the Dorpskerk. If you would like to include a walk in your stay, check the current dates with the Genootschap.
