Katwijk: Roman History, Museums and Dunes
Accommodation in Katwijk
In Katwijk, Roman history, museums and coastal scenery come together. Markers at Castellumplein, collections exploring the region’s past and routes linked to the Limes offer a range of cultural connections for your trip. There are also dunes, nature activities and seasonal events.
Roman Traces and Routes Along the Limes
The Torenmuseum devotes a permanent exhibition on two floors to the Roman history of Valkenburg. You can also trace this part of history outdoors: the hill at Castellumplein was created by the construction of seven successive forts. Their outlines are marked by round bronze studs set into the road surface. The Limes ends where the Rhine flows into the sea at Katwijk, and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the starting point of the route, a Limescope—a virtual-reality binocular viewer—shows the former Roman fort of Brittenburg, which stood off the coast 1,800 years ago. For a hike, the 275-kilometre Romeinse Limespad starts at the Buitensluis in Katwijk. Its 13-kilometre section from Katwijk to Leiden leads to Leidsche Hout. As an alternative for cyclists, the Limes cycling route runs between Katwijk and Leiden along the border of the former Roman Empire.
Museums with Different Areas of Focus
The Katwijks Museum combines art and fishing history. Its extensive collection on the fishing heritage is complemented by paintings by artists including Jan Toorop, Jan van Goyen and Willy Sluiter. The museum is housed in a former shipowner’s residence from the early 20th century, about 200 metres from the sea. From Leiden Central Station, you can reach it on buses 431 or 90; check the latest route information before travelling.
The collection at Museum Oud-Rijnsburg spans from around 600 to the present day. A model illustrates the former abbey complex. Museum Het Spinozahuis is in Rijnsburg, in the house where Benedictus de Spinoza lived; it also features a reconstruction of his library based on the 1677 inventory of his estate. For another glimpse into the past, visit the visitor centre at vliegveld Valkenburg: its permanent exhibition covers the history of the airfield from the 1930s until it closed in 2006. Check the latest visitor information in advance.
Museum Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden explores the historical significance of steam locomotives in the Netherlands and how steam engines work in its indoor exhibition. The open-air museum features historic passenger carriages as well as steam and diesel locomotives. Visitors can sit in the driver’s cab or take part in a scavenger hunt.
Dunes, Forest and Views
Katwijk and its dune area are part of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen. South of Katwijk lies Berkheide, a Natura 2000 dune area that is also part of the national park. Vlaggeduin is 37 metres high and the highest natural point in the province of Zuid-Holland. These landscapes complement the museums with opportunities to explore nature, without any one destination defining the character of the entire area.
Panbos, also known as Pan van Persijn, is a woodland for walking and playing, suitable for all ages. Duck ponds, play equipment, a deer enclosure and grassy areas offer different ways to spend time outdoors. Opening may be subject to seasonal conditions; check before your visit. Natuurcentrum Katwijk focuses on nature, the environment and the living environment of Katwijk aan Zee. Visitors can also take part in activities in nature; the specific programme may vary.
Vuurbaak, also called Vierboet, brings together coastal scenery and history. After the Brandaris, it is the oldest surviving lighthouse building in the Netherlands and stands 14 metres high. The viewing platform, which is open to the public seasonally, is about 30 metres above sea level. Check opening dates before your visit.
Seasonal Events and Water Activities
Every summer, a tourist market is held in the centre of Katwijk aan Zee. It features regional products, performances and workshops. As specific dates may vary, it is worth checking the latest events calendar. DUNAatelier offers changing exhibitions throughout the year, with workshops and talks added in the summer months. Check the latest offerings before your visit here, too.
Valkenburgse Meer has a sandy beach and opportunities for water sports. Check the current conditions by the water and at the facilities locally. This helps you weigh up cultural visits, time in nature and water activities when planning your trip, without treating these different options as interchangeable.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
Katwijk can be reached by public transport or bicycle. If you are travelling by car, there are numerous parking spaces and garages right by the sea; parking conditions and availability may change, so check the latest information. If you are combining accommodation plans with excursions, the different areas of focus can help you choose: Limes history and museums sit alongside nature and water activities.
