Discover Gorinchem: Ramparts, museums and water lines
Accommodation in Gorinchem
Gorinchem combines the history of its fortifications with museums, themed trails and experiences on the water. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hollandse Waterlinies; this applies to the area within the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, including its core and buffer zones. From Gorinchem, you can explore the southernmost part of the Hollandse Waterlinies. This gives you several options when planning your trip: historic structures and city history, walks with texts, or activities on the water.
Discover the history of the fortress through its historic structures
The Grote Toren is a late-medieval tower. Its former Catholic St. Maartenskerk was so badly damaged during the siege of 1813/1814 that it was demolished. A church building from the 19th century now stands there; the tower is called the Grote Toren. It is considered the most distinctive building in the fortress. Visitors can climb it and enjoy the view. This site brings together several different periods of history.
The Dalempoort is the only surviving city gate in Gorinchem. It dates from 1597 and has a small tower with a clock. A footpath beneath the gate leads to the Merwede; follow it for good views of the city ramparts and the Korenmolen De Hoop. The De Hoop windmill was built in 1764. A gallery mill, it stands on the city wall along the Boven-Merwede and is easy to see from the water. Visitors can enter the Molen De Hoop and go up to the gallery; from there, you can take in the Waterlinielandschap 1672.
Museums and guided stories of the city
The Gorcums Museum is easily accessible for people with disabilities and wheelchair users. The VVV information point for activities in Gorinchem is located at the museum reception. The Hendrick Hamel Museum is dedicated to the 17th-century voyage of the seafarer Hendrick Hamel: this includes his shipwreck, his captivity in Korea and his subsequent escape to Japan.
If you would like to get to know the city on a guided tour, official VVV guides lead visitors around Gorinchem and bring its hidden stories and character to life. The Industrieel erfgoed route Gorinchem offers a different themed perspective. Using the izi.TRAVEL app, it takes you through the city’s industrial past and covers ports, artisans’ houses, warehouses and factories.
Walking routes with different focuses
The 7.5-kilometre Poëzieroute Gorinchem is a walking route through the fortress. Along the way, it passes 40 poems and text excerpts connected to Gorinchem. QR codes in the accompanying booklet let you listen to the poems on a smartphone or tablet. The Wandelpad over de vestingwallen walking route has a different focus: it runs along the almost completely preserved ramparts, with their bastions, and offers views of ports and rivers.
The two routes differ mainly in their content: the Poëzieroute focuses on poems and texts, while the Wandelpad follows the ramparts and offers views. If you are interested in industrial themes, the route using the izi.TRAVEL app complements this with a focus on ports, crafts and factories. You can choose according to the subjects you would like to learn more about during your stay.
Experience Gorinchem from the water
The Gorinchem-Woudrichem passenger and bicycle ferry operates year-round according to a set timetable. Plan your trip around the timetable and check departure times before travelling. At Bootverhuur Gorinchem, the boarding point is in the centre of Gorinchem at the Lingehaven; from there, you can head straight out onto the Linge. Check the boarding details before setting off.
If you are looking for a hotel in Gorinchem, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the historic structures and the history of the fortress, choose a route featuring poems, or include the waterways? The museums and guided city tours also offer their own ways to discover Gorinchem’s history. Once you have a clear idea of your interests, you can compare hotel options to find what suits your planned stay.
