Gorinchem lies where the Linge and Merwede rivers meet. Its five kilometres of ramparts offer views across the water; museums, historic buildings and paths along the fortifications provide further perspectives on the city. This makes it easy to plan your stay around a wide range of interests, from local history and art to walks and activities by the river.

Fortress history along paths and ramparts

Gorinchem’s fortifications had eleven bastions and four gates: Arkelpoort, Kanselpoort, Waterpoort and Dalempoort. Construction began in 1584 and was completed in 1642. Today, the ramparts offer a vivid introduction to the history of the fortifications as well as views of the rivers. Gorinchem is also one of the six fortresses of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

Wandelpad over de vestingwallen is a five-kilometre walking route along the ramparts. Visitors who want to explore the fortifications in more detail can also follow the self-guided tour from Vesting Gorinchem: a guidebook or the izi.TRAVEL app provides information about each site. Another option is Rondje Pontje 30 km, a 30-kilometre recreational route.

Museums and insights into the city

The Gorcums Museum explores Gorinchem’s history and features contemporary art. It is housed in the former town hall on Grote Markt. Its collection includes thousands of notable objects and works of art that illustrate the city’s history. The museum is about a 15-minute walk from Gorinchem railway station. For visitors with reduced mobility, it has a lift, an accessible toilet and a wheelchair.

The exhibitions at the Hendrick Hamel Museum focus on Hendrick Hamel, the 17th century, Korea and Gorinchem. Individual exhibitions change; the collection is predominantly historical, maritime and Korean in focus. The museum is wheelchair accessible, and all floors can be reached by passenger lift. Check this information again before your trip. There is also a Korean garden in the city centre, behind the Hamelhuis.

Towers, art and the harbour

The Grote Toren is a late medieval tower that belonged to the Catholic St. Maarten’s Church in 1572. Climbing it offers views, but access may vary depending on operating arrangements. Check visitor access in advance. The Sint Janstoren is 61.5 metres high, including its spire. In addition to church services, the Grote Kerk is used for memorial events, exhibitions, concerts and other cultural or social activities, provided they are compatible with the church building. The programme of individual events varies.

Changing exhibitions at the Kruitmagazijnen feature modern art objects, photographs, jewellery, textiles, glass art and ceramics. The historic harbour offers a different perspective on the city’s maritime heritage: on the edge of the city centre, near Korenmolen Nooit Volmaakt, there are permanent moorings for historic ships. The Jan de Sterke is a working heritage vessel built in 1913. The mill itself is round and made of stone; it stands on a bastion of the fortress and was built in 1718. Its mill shop sells grain and flour products, mill bread and fresh regional produce.

Waterways and excursions

In Gorinchem, you can go boating, stand-up paddleboarding or swimming; walks along the river are another option. The Gorinchem–Woudrichem passenger and bicycle ferry operates year-round on a fixed schedule. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to take the ferry. Gorinchem is part of the Vestingdriehoek: Gorinchem, Woudrichem, Zaltbommel, Slot Loevestein and Fort Vuren are linked by waterways and ferries.

The Lingehaven shopping quays also offer a practical point of reference: they are on the shopping-street side, behind Langendijk and Kortendijk, between Peterbrug and Korenbrug. If you plan to visit the quays, check the latest information on their use. Whether you’re interested in fortress paths, museum visits or activities on the water, Gorinchem offers a variety of ways to explore.
