If you’re looking for a hotel in Ouddorp, nature reserves, walking trails, watersports and culture can each offer a different focus for your trip. The places and activities differ in specific ways: for example, in a stated trail length, a wider range of walking routes, seasonal wildlife sightings or a tram excursion.

Nature reserves and trails nearby

De Kleistee is located in the heart of Ouddorp and is a nature reserve of particular historical value. It preserves a remnant of the centuries-old landscape of sand ridges. In spring and summer, special flower species grow there; with careful observation, you may also spot brightly coloured butterflies. De Kleistee therefore combines a distinctive landscape feature with seasonal wildlife sightings.

A five-kilometre walking trail leads through the Volgerland area. White arrows mark the route, which is open from sunrise to sunset. Check accessibility information before your visit. Below the Ouddorp lighthouse, Volgerland lies along the inner edge of the dunes: around 100 hectares form an important natural corridor there as part of the ecological main structure. From a viewpoint by a creek, you may be able to spot reed buntings, small reed warblers, little grebes, ducks and spoonbills.

Koudenhoek near Ouddorp is an extensive meadow area crossed by remnants of old tidal creeks. The Duinen van Goeree near Ouddorp has a different landscape, with shifting dunes, mudflats, wide beaches and woodland. This dune area has several birdwatching points and walking trails ranging from 2.8 to 20 kilometres. This contrasts with the single five-kilometre trail in Volgerland. The paved Middelduinweg also runs through the Duinen van Goeree.

De Punt van Goeree is a 150-hectare dune area on the Grevelingen. Walking paths lead through extensive dunes and past a field full of orchids. There is also a bunker complex from the Second World War, which formed part of the Atlantic Wall built by the Germans. The landscape and the history of the war are closely connected at this site.

Watersports and getting around

Kitesurfing, windsurfing, foiling, sailing and stand-up paddleboarding are all possible at the Brouwersdam. The activities therefore cover a range of watersports.

The RTM Museum in Ouddorp offers, by reservation, round trips on historic trams across the Brouwersdam to Scharendijke and back. Admission to the museum is included in a standard tram ticket. As reservations, operating days and ticket terms may vary over time, it’s best to check them before planning your visit.

If you’d like to find your way around by bike, a cycling junction map is available from the VVV Inspiratiepunt in Ouddorp. Availability may change, so check if you need the map for your plans.

Lighthouse, art and history

The Westhoofd lighthouse stands in the dunes near Ouddorp. Architect G.W. Friedhoff designed it in the Traditionalist style; the lighthouse was built in 1947–1948. Its stated construction dates and design give the building a clear historical connection, without implying that it is open to visitors.

The private Achter De Westduinen sculpture garden is also located in Ouddorp, on the South Holland island of Goeree-Overflakkee. It brings together art, nature and history. For your travel plans, it offers a cultural counterpoint to the nature trails and historic sites; its private status remains important.
