Discover Goedereede: Tower, Mill and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Goedereede
Goedereede combines a distinctive history with a Gothic tower, a historic mill, cycling routes and regional culinary offerings. If you are looking for a hotel in Goedereede, you can plan your stay around specific interests: the museum and architecture, a cycling route, or wine and local food.
Town History and the Torenmuseum
Goedereede was granted town rights in 1312 by Lord Gereart van Voorne. By the mid-15th century, it had developed into a thriving trading centre. The Gothic tower was built between 1467 and 1512. These dates trace the town’s history from the granting of town rights through its trading past to a later building. Today, the tower houses the Torenmuseum Goedereede, which focuses on the history of Goedereede and its church tower.
The museum’s first floor houses a permanent lighthouse exhibition. Visitors can also climb 217 steps to the top and enjoy panoramic views over Goeree-Overflakkee, the Grevelingen and the North Sea. This makes the exhibition and the view from above two distinct highlights of a visit to the tower.
Mills and Cycling Routes
Molen de Windvang has stood on a slight rise west of Goedereede since 1719. Its milling stage is on the first floor and can only be reached by one of two outdoor staircases. The mill is notable not only for its history but also for a specific architectural detail: the position of the milling stage and its outside access.
Molen de Windvang is a named stop on the Molenroute Goeree, a 33.1-kilometre cycling route. The stop is at Goereeseweg 5, 3252 AL Goedereede. Another cycling route, Havenkanalen Goedereede-Stellendam, runs along the harbour canals of Goedereede and Stellendam. The Goedereede Route also passes through the area around Goedereede. It runs from the TOP near the fish auction in Stellendam to Goedereede, passing part of the De Kwade Hoek nature reserve along the way and continuing through the polder.
The routes differ in their features: the Molenroute has a specified length and mill stop, the Havenkanalen route follows the canals, and the Goedereede Route can be identified by its starting point, destination and landscape sections. This makes it easier to decide whether the distance, the route along the harbour canals, or the named stops and sections is most important to your plans.
Wine and Local Specialities
In 2018, Gert-Jan van Veen established his own vineyard, named GoedeReede Wijnen. The vineyard has five different grape varieties. Wine tastings are held at GoedeReede Wijnen during the summer months; check the dates before travelling, as this is a seasonal offering. The year 2018 refers to when the vineyard was established, while the summer months are when the tastings take place.
De Oude Bakkerij offers freshly ground coffee, artisan farmhouse soft-serve ice cream, filled rolls, freshly baked cakes and local specialities. So, alongside historic buildings and cycling routes, Goedereede also offers specific culinary experiences to choose from.
