Reeuwijk
Accommodation in Reeuwijk
Reeuwijk combines a landscape shaped by water and polders with opportunities for outdoor activities and local history. The Reeuwijkse Plassen are accessible year-round; the area of the lakes and their surroundings is designated as a quiet area in the Groene Hart. This gives you several options when planning a hotel stay: time by the lakes, trips through the polders and the Streekmuseum Reeuwijk. Which of these interests you most can shape how you spend your days.
Lakes, polders and trails
The Gouwe Wiericke walking route network offers 250 kilometers of walking trails in the polders around the Reeuwijkse Plassen. This distance describes the network as a whole and should not be confused with the length of an individual walk. For cycling, the Reeuwijkse Plassen cycle network offers routes via junctions in the Reeuwijkse Plassen area and the Zuidplaspolder. The two networks provide different reference points for planning: a total distance is given for walking, while cycling routes are organized around junctions.
The Elfhoeven nature and recreation area can be explored on foot or by bicycle. It can be reached via Korssendijk and Groene Ree. On the “Vogels van de Reeuwijkse Plassen” walk, a guide accompanies participants through the area. This guided walk is another way to get to know the landscape with a guide.
The Oude Dorpenroute is an 18-kilometer canoe trip through the polders between Reeuwijk and Bodegraven. You can also paddle shorter sections: the Boerderijenroute is 7 kilometers long, and the Landschapsroute is 11 kilometers long. The three route lengths make clear the difference between the full canoe trip and the shorter sections. A boating permit is required to navigate the Reeuwijkse Plassen in your own boat or sloop. Check the current permit process in advance.
Local history at the Streekmuseum Reeuwijk
The Streekmuseum Reeuwijk is located between the Reeuwijkse Plassen in an old farmhouse. It presents the history of the village, the countryside and traditional crafts. The museum displays original peat-extraction tools. A scale model at a ratio of 1:10 illustrates the process from dredging to fuel. Alongside the individual tools, it also shows how peat was extracted.
The museum is open without an appointment on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Group visits are by appointment only. Check the opening hours before your visit.
The H.H. Petrus en Pauluskerk is also part of Reeuwijk’s cultural landscape. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, it is a cruciform church and part of a church complex. Its dedication and architectural design add a religious and architectural point of reference to the themes of village history, the countryside and traditional crafts.
