Nieuwerbrug aan Den Rijn offers several cultural and historical points of interest to help plan your trip: bridges, a mill, a monument and a museum. Cycling, walking and boating routes around the waterways are additional options. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay focused on local history or outdoor activities, these themes can help you structure your choice of destination.

Bridges and River Traffic

Nieuwerbrug aan Den Rijn probably originated around a bridge over the Oude Rijn between Bodegraven and Woerden. From the late Middle Ages onward, the movement of people and goods along the Oude Rijn became increasingly important to the town, especially after the construction of the two Wierickes. The bridge as a possible starting point and river traffic are two distinct aspects of the town’s history.

The Tolbrug is the latest successor to a bridge that stood in Nieuwerbrug aan Den Rijn around 1510. This provides a specific historical reference point for the history of the bridges, alongside the town’s probable origins.

Monuments and Mill History

The Onafhankelijkheidstoren was built in 1913 to celebrate the centenary of independence after French rule and is a municipal monument. The anniversary gives the tower a different historical context from the bridge history associated with the Tolbrug.

The present-day Weijpoortse Molen was built in 1674 as a Wipmolen to drain the waterline after the Rampjaar. Its construction date, mill type and purpose in managing water are connected: the mill’s purpose is just as much a part of its history as its classification as a structure. While the tower commemorates an anniversary, the mill draws attention to water management.

The opportunity to talk to someone on site is also subject to a condition: when the Weijpoortse Molen is turning, a volunteer miller is there to answer visitors’ questions.

Museum De Koffietuin

Museum De Koffietuin is located in Nieuwerbrug in an old farmhouse, parts of which date back to 1610. Its exhibits focus on all things coffee. The museum offers guided tours and workshops by prior appointment.

The museum sells more than 25 varieties of coffee, including coffee from Toradja, Kopi Luwak and Jamaica Blue Mountain. It also offers the full tea range from Wijs & zonen, which comprises more than 100 varieties of tea. In this way, the museum combines its focus on coffee with a specific selection of coffee and tea.

Cycling and Routes Along the Water

The 55-kilometer Waterlinie Luister Route Henrick is a cycling route that starts at Theetuin de Koffietuin in Nieuwerbrug. This gives cyclists a specific route with a named starting point and a set length.

The Oude Rijn, Enkele Wiericke and Dubbele Wiericke around Nieuwerbrug are especially suitable for walking, cycling and boating routes. This wider choice of route types differs from the individually named Waterlinie Luister Route Henrick. Depending on whether you want to explore a particular cycling route or different options along the water, you can focus on different things during your stay.
