Tubbergen brings together distinctive religious buildings, places of remembrance and walking routes. If you are looking for a destination with cultural attractions and opportunities to explore on foot, you will find several different points of interest here—from church architecture to the surrounding landscape.

Churches and local remembrance

The Neo-Gothic St. Pancratius Church was built in 1896–1897 to a design by Alfred Tepe. The building stands beside a west tower dating from the 16th century. Pancratius Church was elevated to the status of a Basilica Minor in 2000. The Basilica of St. Pancratius contains 35 stained-glass windows created by artists from five generations of the Nicolas family. Its architecture, ecclesiastical status and stained-glass art each make their own distinctive contribution.

The Hervormde Kerk offers a different architectural impression: it is a simple hall church dating from 1810, with a small tower above the façade. Among its notable furnishings is a late-Gothic sandstone pulpit from 1519. The plain building and the older pulpit represent different historical layers that can be read in this church building.

Motorsport is another part of the town’s history. The motorcycle monument on a roundabout in Tubbergen refers to the TT van Tubbergen. It bears the names of five people who lost their lives in the road races: three racing drivers and two spectators. The monument thus commemorates not only motor racing, but also the people who died in these races.

Walking routes of different lengths

The eight-kilometre Tubberger Esch village loop starts in the centre of Tubbergen, at Raadhuisplein. Its starting point within the town is therefore clearly identified. For a comparison with another walking option, the Dorpsommetje Tubbergen: Schultenwolde is 10.5 kilometres long. These two distances make the difference in length clear without implying a walking time.

The Dr. Schaepman Monument stands on the Tubbergse Esch: a statue of Mgr. Dr. Schaepman designed by August Falise. It was unveiled on 11 August 1927. The combination of a named monument and a specific date also makes the site interesting to visitors who would like to explore local remembrance on a walk.

Eeshof and the surrounding landscape

Herman Schaepman was born at De Eeshof in 1844. The lower part of the house Enschede, also known as the Eeshof, partly dates back to the 18th century. The Eeshof also has visible ditches connecting the Heinemansbeek and Markgraven. The birthplace, older building fabric and waterways each offer a different insight into the history of this place.

Hondenven lies near Tubbergen. It is a geological monument and the remains of an Ice Age pingo. The surrounding landscape has also been shaped by human use: meadows, raised fields and heathland form a mosaic. Hedgerows, rows of trees and old paths naturally mark the boundaries between plots. The area can thus be viewed both in terms of its geological origins and the structure of its cultivated landscape.

GLASRIJK Tubbergen

GLASRIJK Tubbergen is an international glass art festival in Overijssel, held annually. The festival combines glass art exhibitions with workshops, music and guided tours, as well as cycling and walking routes. Its programme therefore extends beyond exhibitions and appeals to a range of interests. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular edition, check the dates for the relevant event period.
