Harbrinkhoek: Hiking and Local History
Accommodation in Harbrinkhoek
A trip to Harbrinkhoek can combine hiking trails with local history. The named trails differ in length and route; one of them also has a stated duration. Historical references range from a former urn burial ground to the Brandkast, which commemorates an event from 1944. This lets you choose the focus of your stay based on trail length and your interests.
Compare hiking trails by length and route
Two village walking loops offer a straightforward comparison of lengths: Het Kroamschudpad is 5 km long, while Het Haarbiger kuierpad is 7 km long. The second trail is therefore two kilometres longer. Both routes are described as village walking loops and offer clear guidance if you want to compare trails by length.
The Dorpsommetje Harbrinkhoek–Mariaparochie is a 5.0 km walking trail with a stated duration of 1:14. It is therefore the same length as Het Kroamschudpad; the time given also provides a specific planning reference for this Dorpsommetje.
One starting point for the Wandelnetwerk van Twente is at Almeloseweg 13: junction H67, with three routes. As the number of routes may change, it is best to check the current selection before setting out.
The De Markgraven hiking route follows the 12 km-long Markgraven stream for 8 km and passes through the Schultenwolde estate. In the direction of Albergen, a path leads through the rolling meadows of Klössehoek. There are also trails along the Markgraven in the area around Harbrinkhoek.
To reach the De Markgraven hiking route, take the bus from Almelo Central Station in the direction of Overdinkel and get off at the Kampkuiper stop in Harbrinkhoek. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Local history at specific places
The Brandkast on Almeloseweg commemorates the largest bank robbery in the Netherlands, carried out by resistance fighters in 1944. It stands at the corner of the MVV’29 car park, next to the former Café Frielink. This connects the historical event with a specific location.
Mariaparochie also has a historical landmark: the so-called Monumentale Wegsteen originally stood behind the present-day parish church. Erve Löwkeboer on Almeloseweg was mentioned in 1262 under the name Lodewich.
Another early trace is the Loakenbeld, an urn burial ground from the Iron Age. The former site was in the immediate vicinity of Harbrinkhoek on Slagenweg, roughly opposite Broekweg. This location information helps place the Loakenbeld as a historical site rather than mistake it for a present-day attraction.
The historical periods differ considerably: the Loakenbeld dates back to the Iron Age, Erve Löwkeboer was mentioned in 1262, and the Brandkast commemorates the 1944 bank robbery. Together, these places offer insight into different periods of local history.
Kiekersdag and Carnival
Kiekersdag is a recurring occasion that traditionally begins with a carnival parade through Harbrinkhoek/Mariaparochie. The carnival association De Dubbelkiekers in Harbrinkhoek/Mariaparochie has been active since 2000. If you would like to plan your trip around Kiekersdag, check the event dates in advance.
