Kallenkote
Accommodation in Kallenkote
If you are considering Kallenkote as a destination for a stay, you can explore the village through a range of interests: landscape and village layout, historic farmstead architecture, and remembrance of events from 1944. These topics offer different points of reference for planning your trip, without all leading to the same kind of experience.
Landscape and village layout
Kallenkote lies on the border between Overijssel and Drenthe, and also on the boundary between sandy and peat landscapes. These two transitions form the village’s geographical setting. Kallenkote is also a characteristic ribbon village, following the course of the Steenwijker Aa. Its linear settlement pattern is a distinctive feature in addition to its historic individual buildings.
The village’s history can also be traced far back in time: around 1200, Kallenkote was first recorded on a map under the name Collencoten. This early name connects the village’s present-day name with a historical reference. The village’s long history of settlement and its enduring relationship with the Steenwijker Aa therefore complement one another in characterizing the village.
Remembrance and historic architecture
The 1944 memorial commemorates six residents of Kallenkote who took part in active or passive resistance against the occupiers. On 13 October 1944, they were shot by the occupiers without a trial. The memorial thus refers to a specific event and the residents involved. Its design is simple and striking: a large glacial erratic bears a commemorative plaque and is accompanied by a semicircle of smaller stones.
Another historic focal point is the Kallenkote 25 farmstead complex in the northwest of Overijssel. It dates from the second half of the 19th century and consists of a farmhouse with a cross barn, as well as two sheds. The farmyard is also part of the ensemble as described: it is partly paved with glacial erratics and bricks. The buildings and yard paving offer different architectural details through which to explore the complex.
The memorial and the farmstead complex represent different aspects of local history. The memorial is about remembering people and a precisely dated event; Kallenkote 25 is about the composition of a historic farmstead. If you are particularly interested in history, these different focal points can help guide your exploration of Kallenkote.
Group activities and cuisine
At Maargies Hoeve, the horse tram (paardentram) can be hired for outings. It can accommodate up to 20 people and can be used with or without a driver, depending on your preference. For planning a group outing, both the group size and whether you need a driver are useful points of comparison.
The Kallenkerkje is an official wedding venue for small, intimate ceremonies and can accommodate about 30 guests. This is an approximate figure that indicates the scale of the venue, not a larger celebration. For a group planning a wedding, this format is quite different from an outing on the horse tram.
At Maargies Kooklokaal, groups of 8 to a maximum of 15 people can book cooking workshops. A workshop lasts about four hours and costs €65 per person. The price includes three drinks and, to finish, a cup of coffee or tea. The Maargies surprise menu is served there on Wednesdays and Fridays. Where possible, it uses meat from animals raised on the farm, fresh vegetables from the garden, and Maargies dairy products. This gives you the choice between a workshop involving hands-on cooking and a set menu. Check dates, prices, and availability before making specific plans, as details may change.
