Blokzijl: Town History, Ramparts and Nature
Accommodation in Blokzijl
Blokzijl is designated as a protected townscape in the municipality of Steenwijkerland. Stately merchants’ houses stand around the Havenkolk, bearing witness to a prosperous past. The Bierkade, like the Brouwersgracht, is evidence of the many former breweries around the Havenkolk. This historic focus is complemented by the history of the fortifications, cultural offerings at the Grote Kerk and the Het Gildenhuys Museum, as well as cycling and boat routes. Blokzijl lies in the heart of Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Whether you want to focus mainly on the historic townscape, a museum visit or a trip on the water, you can plan your visit around these different highlights.
Townscape and History of the Fortifications
Blokzijl’s former fortifications were built by Sonoy in early 1581. The western ramparts were restored in 2009 and form a historic walking route with views of the old town, the harbour and the surrounding countryside. In contrast to the merchants’ houses and traces of breweries around the Havenkolk, the route focuses on the history of the fortifications and the views. The early construction of the fortifications and their later restoration mark different milestones in the town’s history.
Cultural Offerings
Since its restoration from 1995 to 1999, the Grote Kerk has also been used for cultural events; concerts have been held there since then. If you would like to include a concert in your visit, check the event schedule before travelling. The Het Gildenhuys Museum offers children aged 8 to 12 a treasure hunt, “Weeshuis aan het water,” about life in Blokzijl’s former orphanage. Check the availability of the activity before travelling. The museum also organises group tours; check their availability in advance as well. The church and the museum offer different cultural experiences: concerts at the church, and a children’s activity and group tours at the museum.
On Foot, by Bike or by Boat
The Blokzijl boat connects the town with the De Wieden Visitor Centre in Sint Jansklooster on a return trip through the Beulakerwijde. Check current operating status before travelling. The signposted Rondje De Wieden cycling route can be started at any junction and returns to the starting point. The two options follow different routes: the boat trip goes to the named visitor centre, while the cycling route returns to your chosen starting point. Check the current route before setting off by bike.
Practical Information
If you are travelling by car, there are two spacious visitor car parks outside the historic Havenkolk. Check the signs and parking regulations before travelling. There is a bicycle hub on Kanaalweg; check its availability in advance if you plan to use it.
