Heino grew from the hamlet of Ter Heyne and was first mentioned in 1236 in a document issued by the Bishop of Utrecht. The church, village pump and former mill tell the story of different chapters in the town’s history.

Local History and Buildings

The N.H. Hall Church stands at Canadastraat 1. Its tower is older than the current church building, which was completed in 1867. The church and tower are of general cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning significance. The Nicolaaskerk is designated a Rijksmonument and is surrounded by Dorpsstraat, Marktplein and Canadastraat.

The Leugenpomp, also known as the Leug’npompe, stands in the heart of Heino. The centuries-old village pump is considered the town’s best-known symbol. In the 19th century, it was installed next to the Nicolaaskerk to supply residents with clean water. Stichting de Leugenpomp restored the pump in 2022, after which water flowed through it again. A bench and a water-play feature were also added during the restoration. These visitor amenities may change.

De Maalderij began as a steam-powered grain mill and is now Heino’s cultural and historical center. Another landmark in the town’s history is the Heinose weeping beech in the Hof van Rakhorst: it was planted in the first half of the 19th century and is now one of Heino’s oldest trees.

Kasteel Het Nijenhuis is a very well-preserved havezate. Ornamental gardens and woodland alternate around the castle in its sculpture garden. More than 100 sculptures from the collections of Museum de Fundatie, Museum Beelden aan Zee and the Provincie Overijssel are displayed there. The works on display may change.

Festivals, Theater and Walks

Pompdagen Heino is an annual folk festival that begins on the third Wednesday in August and is organized by Stichting Heija Heino. The festival takes place at several central locations in Heino. Exact dates and the program vary each year. If you are traveling for the festival, check the information for the relevant year before planning your accommodation.

THEATER Podium Heino also offers a range of performances, including cabaret, children’s shows, theater and classical concerts. The program changes seasonally. If you are traveling to Heino for a particular performance, check the dates in the relevant program before planning your stay.

The Omheining organization holds walks through the area around Heino, Lierderholthuis and Laag Zuthem every year on Easter Monday and Boxing Day. These are two recurring public-holiday dates for walks in the area.

Routes and Countryside

The 47-kilometer “Sallands weteringenlandschap” route passes through the center of Heino and to Marktplein, where the Nicolaaskerk stands. Landscape features along the route include the Heinose vloedgraven, a wet nature area that is occasionally flooded or marshy.

From Heino railway station, a walking path about 1,200 meters long leads through the woods to Kasteel Het Nijenhuis; the walk takes approximately 20 minutes. Walking conditions may vary. The route information describes different distances: the walking path runs from the station to the castle, while the 47-kilometer route leads to the center and Marktplein.

Heino has its own railway station, several bus stops and a community bus. Check connections for your travel dates before setting off, as transport services may change.
