Raalte combines nature experiences with local history and culture. In Boetelerveld, heathland pools and rare plants and animals shape the landscape; trails in and around Raalte lead to historic sites and tell the story of the region. When planning your stay, you can choose from village walks, longer hikes, cycling tours and cultural activities.

Nature Reserves and Walking Trails

The 170-hectare Boetelerveld is designated as a Natura 2000 site and is known for the marsh gentian and the great crested newt. The nature reserve contains the natural heathland pools Grote Rietgat and Kleine Turfgat, as well as man-made drinking pools for grazing animals. The 4 km Boetelerveld walking route passes through the remaining wet heathland near Raalte, which is home to rare plants and animals. Water levels can vary by season; stay on marked trails in this sensitive habitat.

The landscape also takes center stage at Luttenberg: the De Luttenberg nature reserve borders the village and is part of Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. A short trail features noticeable changes in elevation. The Luttenberg Experience Route passes through forest and heathland and shares information about plants, animals and cultural heritage. Designed as a family and educational route, it is suitable for children up to 12 years old.

Local History on Foot and by Bike

The Dorpswandeling Raalte is 5 km long, passes through the village and introduces its history. For a longer walk, take Van kerk naar kasteel: the 18 km route passes through Raalte, Boetelerveld, Schoonheten and Heeterveld, exploring the cultural and historical story of the landscape. It starts and ends at the Plaskerk, about 700 metres from Raalte railway station. The Plaskerk itself is a single-nave Late Gothic church with religious secco paintings on its ceilings dating from the 15th century; access to the interior may depend on church arrangements. Check the latest route information before setting out.

If you prefer to travel by bike, there is also a 26 km route through Raalte, Boetelerveld, Schoonheten and Heeterveld, with a cultural and historical focus. In Heeten, Expeditie Heeten offers two more options: a walk of about 3 km from the Germanenkamer to sites with notable archaeological finds, and a cycling route of about 35 km through the surrounding area. It passes canal bridges, a V1 launch site and historic farmhouses. The different distances and modes of transport make it easy to choose a day trip that suits your plans.

Museums, Stages and Local Culture

The Germanenkamer at KulturhusTrefpunt Heeten presents archaeological finds, 3D images, animations and film footage about the Germanic peoples in Heeten. Various media offer another way to learn about the history behind the archaeological sites. Check the visitor reservation arrangements in advance. Another collection can be found at the American Motorcycle Museum in Raalte, which focuses on American motorcycles from the early 20th century through the 1980s. The museum holds a swap meet twice a year; the exact dates may change.

The American Motorcycle Museum is accessible by bus or train. It is about a ten-minute walk from Raalte station on the Zwolle–Enschede line; bus route 165 from Deventer goes to this station. Check the timetable before travelling. For a night at the cinema, FilmHuisRaalte screens films in the film room at Annahuis, De Plas 8 in Raalte; the program may change. HOFtheater is a medium-sized theater with a round auditorium and 300 seats. It presents around 80 professional performances a year, although the program may change.

Gardens, Crafts and More Day Trips

Tuinen van Salland offers a look at a variety of gardens. Some participating gardens are open to the public on the first Sunday of each month; check which gardens are taking part on your preferred dates. One of the gardens is an architecturally designed space around a thatched house built in 1921. Hedges divide the garden into different areas, where historic and contemporary tulips can be seen. By arrangement, participating venues can offer groups guided tours with coffee, tea and a small treat.

In Raalte, Magies Glas offers workshops in leaded glass, Tiffany glass, glass painting, glass fusing, slumping and casting. Ask about dates and booking options in advance. Beeldentuin Mariënheem is a garden open to visitors and a gallery in Mariënheem, within the municipality of Raalte. Covering more than three hectares, it has ponds, lawns, trees and an orchard, as well as outdoor sculptures and objects; exhibitions and opening hours may vary. Mariënheem is also home to the Onze Lieve Vrouw ten Hemelopneming complex, consisting of a church and rectory built in 1937 in the Delft School style.

De Flierefluiter in Raalte offers something different: its facilities include indoor, outdoor and water playgrounds, a petting zoo and a mini-campsite. Alongside walks and cultural visits, you can choose from other leisure activities, while the gardens, museums and trails each reveal a different side of the destination.
