Local History and Buildings

Beerzerveld originated as a peat colony on the southeastern side of the Beerzerzand after the Overijssels Kanaal was dug in 1858. The canal is therefore part of the town’s founding history. A lift bridge dating from around 1910 crosses the Overijssels Kanaal at Westerdijk. This marks two distinct points in time: the canal was dug in 1858, and the bridge was built later, around 1910.

The Hervormde Kerk Beerzerveld at Westerweg 39 is a Neoclassical hall church with an entrance façade and a plastered façade tower with a recessed spire. The building dates from 1901. The parsonage at Westerweg 40 dates from 1905. At Stenendijk 5 is the Oldambt farmstead, a modern kop-romp farm dating from around 1930. The church and parsonage are four years apart in date; an approximate period is given for the farmstead.

Landscape and Water

A landscape description published in 2024 characterizes the Beerzerveld area as undeveloped and notes remnants of the raised bog landscape. It describes the area as a nature reserve managed by Landschap Overijssel and identifies it as a habitat for rare plant and animal species.

In the area around Beerzerveld, there are opportunities for swimming, canoeing and pedal boating on the Vecht and the Overijssels Kanaal. Availability and facilities may change; check in advance what is currently offered on these two waterways.
