Arriën: Hiking Routes and Landscape
Accommodation in Arriën
Arriën can be explored through its hiking routes and the landscape along the Vecht. Two routes start in the village: the 6 km Ommen (Arriën) hiking route and the 8.7 km Groene Route. They differ in length and course; the Groene Route is a loop and is flat and almost entirely paved. The route description for the 6 km hike features the Vecht, heathland, woods, and fields.
Hiking Routes from Arriën
The 6 km Ommen (Arriën) hiking route runs along the Vecht, past heathland, through woods, and across fields. Its starting point is at Ridderinkweg 1, 7735 KG Arriën. There is a car park on Ridderinkweg. From the starting point, hikers follow the orange arrows of the hiking trail network. Before setting out, check the route markers and parking situation on site.
The 8.7 km Groene Route also starts in Arriën. As a circular route, it returns to the starting point; the terrain is flat and the surface is almost entirely paved. The difference in length between the two routes is 2.7 km. Together with the circular route and information about the terrain and surface, this provides concrete points of reference when choosing a hike.
Landscape between the Vecht, Fields, and Heathland
Arriën’s arable land lies on the higher-lying es between the Vecht and the village. The lower-lying marsh soils along the Vecht near Arriën are used as grassland. The landscape therefore combines different elevations and land uses: arable fields on the es and grassland on the lower-lying ground by the river.
North of Arriën, the Arriërveld was once an extensive area of heathland. It was part of the communal marke lands of Arriën. Arriën is originally an esdorp (a village built around an open field).
Nature and Birdwatching
Arriën’s floodplain meadows can withstand extreme drought and are also regularly flooded. The Arriër Koeland is home to species-rich grasslands with maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides) and lady’s bedstraw (Galium verum). Arriën is one of the sub-areas of the Vechtdal nature area.
Nearby, at the Koeland, there is a birdwatching hut. You can watch birds from there. The hut is therefore a specific birdwatching reference point; it is in the surrounding area, not within the precisely defined locality of Arriën itself.
Village Character and Strawberry Growing
Strawberry growing is also among the topics associated with the village. RozemArrie is a strawberry farm in the hamlet of Arriën. The Rozema family have been growing strawberries there since 2007. If you would like to visit RozemArrie, check in advance whether visits are possible.
These provide several different starting points for planning your trip: the two hiking routes, the landscape along the Vecht, the natural areas, and strawberry growing.
