If you choose Hengelo for a stay combining culture, technology and time in the great outdoors, you can build your itinerary around a range of different themes. Museums tell stories of local history and technology; historic buildings, a watermill and trails add their own distinctive touches. When planning, it is worth first deciding between a museum visit, a route through the countryside and a visit to the city centre. This lets you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you.

Museums and technology

The Museum Hengelo focuses on the culture and history of Hengelo. A unique cultural and historical collection provides the context for its displays. The museum also offers a searchable digital database of museum objects and documents. You can use it to explore specific topics before your trip; check whether the digital service is currently available.

The Oyfo Techniekmuseum explores the connection and interaction between people, creativity and technology, with an interactive approach. Its offerings include activities, exhibitions, courses and educational projects related to cultural heritage, technology and various art forms. As programme details may change, check the current offerings before your visit. A specific detail is also useful for planning your journey: the museum is a ten-minute walk from Hengelo NS railway station. Check the latest access and visitor information before you travel.

History and architecture

The Lambertus Basilica was built between 1888 and 1890 to a design by G. te Riele, on the site of an earlier building. Its design is inspired by late Lower Rhenish Gothic architecture. The construction period, the earlier building and the architectural influences offer different historical perspectives on the structure.

Tuindorp ’t Lansink also has a specific connection to the city’s history: in particular, Coenrad Frederik (C.F.) Stork implemented the plan for Tuindorp ’t Lansink in 1910. There has been a watermill in Oele since 1334. Watermolen Oele offers tours about the mill’s history, suitable for all age groups. Check access and tour arrangements before your visit.

Green trails and cycling

Weusthagpark in Hengelo covers 200 hectares. Heemtuin Weusthag showcases landscape features and plants that are characteristic of Twente, both today and in the past. This offers a glimpse of features that shape the landscape now, as well as those from earlier times. A walk in Weusthag follows good paths and is also suitable for people with limited mobility. As trail conditions may change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

The F35 cycle highway runs from Nijverdal via Wierden, Almelo, Borne and Hengelo to Enschede. The section between Hengelo and Enschede is one of the completed stretches. As completion status and construction work may change, check the latest route information before setting off. Fietsnetwerk Twente offers a different way to find your bearings: it is a network of linked nodes, many of which are located in Hengelo and the surrounding area. They can be used for cycling through the countryside; check the latest route information before you start.

Art and finding your way around the city centre

The street art route leads to some of the finest artworks in Hengelo city centre. If you are interested in art in public spaces, it offers a different focus from the museums’ technological and cultural-historical themes.
