Jisp combines historic buildings with a distinctive surrounding landscape. When choosing a destination for your stay, you can weigh two different interests: the town’s history and listed buildings, and the natural environment of the Wormer- en Jisperveld. Whaling history is also linked to specific buildings; it spans nearly two centuries.

Buildings from the Whaling Era

Raadhuis Jisp dates from 1650. Three gables define its exterior; inside, features passed down over time include oak panelling, tiled walls, and a 17th-century carved fireplace. The building is considered a tangible testament to the prosperity of the whaling era. Another historical reference is Oudste huisje van Jisp 1656: built in 1656, it dates from the heyday of whaling in Jisp. Together, these buildings help put the town’s long whaling history into context through different structures and dates.

Jisperkerk also shows how the town’s building history spans several eras. The present-day hall church was built in 1822 on the site of a much larger late-medieval three-aisled church. Its 17th-century furnishings include a floor made of gravestones, a pulpit, and pews. The wooden tower is located on the façade. The church thus combines a 19th-century architectural form with older furnishings and the memory of its medieval predecessor.

Village Centre and Listed Houses

Ghispesteijn is a protected parsonage and Rijksmonument in Jisp. The building was constructed in the 19th century in the eclectic style and partly retains its original interior layout, including panelled doors dating from the time it was built. At Dorpsstraat 13, there is also a cheese farm of the hall-house type, with an adjoining enclosure. These different building types add to the picture of the town: the parsonage and farm stand alongside the town hall and church as distinct examples of local architectural history.

Jisp’s historic centre is designated as an archaeological monument. Architectural remains and archaeological traces and objects may be present there, both above and below ground. The Wegsloot is associated with the historic settlement ribbon and preserves elements of the area’s original history. Known as Wegsloot Jisp, it is stop 15 on the Monumentale Route and is located at Dorpsstraat 137. Check the current route before planning, as the numbering may change when it is revised.

Veenweide, Routes, and Water

The Wormer- en Jisperveld, the largest contiguous peat meadow area in Western Europe, lies nearby. Its landscape mosaic consists of water, land, reed-lined meadows, and narrow ditches. Almost all meadow bird species found in the Netherlands breed in this area. This natural environment differs markedly from the historic buildings in the town: if you are considering staying in Jisp, you can treat the town’s history and the nearby meadow landscape as separate points of interest.

There are different route details available to help you plan an outing. A five-kilometre walking route runs from De Poelboerderij through the Schaalsmeerpolder. There is also an approximately 30-kilometre circular cycling route in the Wormer- en Jisperveld towards Fort bij Spijkerboor. These details describe different modes of transport and route lengths, not two sections of the same route. As distances may change when the information is revised, check the current route details before setting off.

The waterscape is another possible point of interest nearby. ZWET'SUP in Jisp rents stand-up paddleboards for exploring the water around 't Zwet. Operating details may change, so check them before making plans. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up architectural history, a walk, a longer bike ride, and an activity on the water without combining these different options into a single route.
