Wormerland: Reed Landscapes and Historic Places
Accommodation in Wormerland
Wormerland offers two distinct perspectives on its landscape and local history: the Wormer and Jisperveld, with its meadows, reed belts and ditches, and historic buildings and memorial sites in Wormer and Jisp. Named trails lead through the polders or connect specific places. This lets you shape your trip around nature, outdoor activities or cultural heritage, choosing what to focus on to suit your interests.
Landscape and Birdlife
The Wormer and Jisperveld is one of Laag-Holland’s Natura 2000 sites. It encompasses hundreds of meadows surrounded by rustling reed belts and narrow ditches. Nearly all meadow-breeding bird species found in the Netherlands nest here. The meadows, reeds and ditches give the area its distinctive landscape character; at the same time, its birdlife offers a special connection with nature during your stay.
There are different ways to find your bearings when exploring the landscape. The Laarzenpad is open from 15 July to 15 October. Plan your visit within this period and check in advance that it is open. Rondje Schaalsmeerpolder is an approximately 4.5-kilometre route through the polders of Oostknollendam and Wormer. Its approximate length and the polders it passes through help you consider it as one option for spending time outdoors.
A signposted Tourist Transfer Point is located at the start of the Poelboerderij car park. From there, you can continue by bicycle, on foot or by boat. Check the parking arrangements before you travel. Unlike a single, specifically named route, this point offers several ways to get around.
Windmills, Churches and Local History
De Koker is an octagonal gallery mill that was rebuilt in Wormer in 1866 and fitted out as a grain mill. It still grinds wheat into flour; organic pancake flour is also available there. De Koker is open to the public by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. If you would like to take some flour home, ask ahead whether it is available.
In Jisp, the Jisperkerk is a national monument with a unique floor made of gravestones. The present church building dates from 1822 and replaced a much older predecessor. Raadhuis Jisp also brings together architectural history and local institutions: it houses, among others, the Oudheidkundige Commissie Jisp and was probably built around 1650. This date remains an estimate.
The Beschuitstoren in Wormer is a replica of the original tower from 1620. It recalls Wormer’s historic ship’s biscuit bakeries and houses the archive of the Historisch Genootschap Wormer. The society uses the tower and its adjoining glass passageway for changing exhibitions. Pakhuis De Schepel displays and explains a selection of old medical instruments from the Zaans Medisch Museum. The cultural offerings thus range from buildings and archives to exhibitions featuring tangible historical objects.
The Vliegtuigmonument Jisp consists of a damaged propeller on a metal pedestal and a plaque about the three aircraft that crashed. The monument commemorates the crew members who lost their lives in those aircraft. Its design combines a visible object with a tribute to the people who died in the crashes.
Planning Routes and Things to See
The trails can be distinguished by their described features: for Rondje Schaalsmeerpolder, the focus is on its approximate length and route through the polders of Oostknollendam and Wormer. Kerkepad is a cycling and walking path that connects Dorpsstraat with Engewormer. For your planning, this means that an approximate distance is given for one route, while the other is described by the two places it connects. No walking time is specified.
The Open Monumentendagen in Wormerland also offer a recurring opportunity to explore local history and historic buildings. They are organised each year jointly by heritage and historical societies and the municipality. If you would like to plan your trip around them, check the dates for the relevant year. Separately, visiting De Koker requires an appointment. The Laarzenpad’s seasonal opening, visits to the mill by appointment and changing exhibitions are different visiting arrangements to take into account when choosing what to do.
