Heemstede: Parklands and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Heemstede
Old park avenues, a historic windmill and a nature playground give you different reasons to stay in Heemstede. Its cultural heritage ranges from an 18th-century windmill to a church with a medieval predecessor; at the same time, the park landscapes differ in their design. The conditions for visiting are also important when planning your trip: Groenendaal is open during daylight hours, and Huis te Manpad park can only be visited by prior arrangement.
Park Landscapes and Nature Experiences
Park Meermond lies on the Spaarne, behind the municipal works depot and next to the Hageveld meadows. Designed as a nature playground, the park includes a play forest and a sustainability trail. Information boards cover the environment and surrounding area. Other activities include quiet walks, enjoying nature and picnicking. Park Meermond is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The main entrance and parking are at Cruquiusweg 49; the recreational path from Hageveld leads to the park on foot or by bicycle.
Groenendaal lies on the original inland dune area and comprises open and dense woodland, deciduous and coniferous trees, older woodland plots, as well as specimen trees and groups of trees. The largely preserved, extensive park woodland dating from the second half of the 18th century is a Rijksmonument. Monumental avenues and early landscape features define its character. These include the Lindenkom, with its adjacent hill and sightlines, as well as the historic viewing hill on which the Belvedere was later built.
Access to Wandelbos Groenendaal and stays there are permitted only between sunrise and sunset. A walking route through Groenendaal is suitable for mobility aids and strollers; if obstacles prevent passage, an alternative is offered. Part of the route passes through an area where dogs are not allowed. These conditions make a difference depending on whether you are traveling with a stroller, mobility aid or dog.
Historic Sites and Their Visiting Conditions
Huis te Manpad is a historic country estate in Heemstede. The house was built between 1634 and 1640 on the orders of the Amsterdam merchant Cornelis Mattheuszn. Heuts. The park retains formal 18th-century features, including a central sightline and parts of the avenue layout. The estate also includes a more than 200-meter-long serpentine wall with old varieties of fruit, as well as 19th-century landscape design features. The park around Huis te Manpad can be visited by prior arrangement; be sure to confirm the arrangements in advance. The island with the privately occupied house is not open to the public.
Windmill, Church and Local Life
De Nachtegaal is a round grain windmill of the gallery-mill type. Its construction began in 1760, and it was completed in 1761. As a reminder of the earliest industrial activities in Heemstede, the mill has industrial archaeological value. It stands prominently by the bridge over the Glipperzandvaart in the old neighborhood of De Glip. The mill’s body is listed as a Rijksmonument; the listing took place on April 21, 2000.
The Oude Kerk was built in 1625 on the remains of a 14th-century chapel dedicated to Mary. It is a single-nave Late Gothic church with the 1656 tomb monument of Adriaan Pauw and a single-manual organ by A. Paradijs, dating from 1752. The church is still used for services and is also suitable for concerts and lectures. The windmill and church thus reveal different sides of the cultural heritage: industrial history in one case, sacred architecture and use in the other.
At the children’s farm ’t Molentje, animals and activities are part of the visitor experience. Its visitor center can be rented for creative workshops for small groups, with a maximum of twelve people per morning or afternoon session. If you are planning such a visit, it is best to confirm your preferred session in advance. A market is held in Heemstede every Wednesday—a recurring event you can add to your weekly plans alongside visits to parks and historic sites.
