Tuitjenhorn: Church, Museum and Activities
Accommodation in Tuitjenhorn
Tuitjenhorn can be explored through several different themes: the village’s history is reflected in its settlement pattern and the Kerkbuurt; the church and museum offer insights into architectural and everyday history. Holle Bolle Boom, the Midgardroute and the “Struinen” market add further specific themes. This lets you plan around what interests you most during your stay.
Village Character and History
Tuitjenhorn originally developed as an elongated ridge of dwelling mounds, also known as “wallen.” The Kerkbuurt was the original main settlement and is a distinctive small neighbourhood. It is still easy to make out thanks to the adjacent park. This settlement pattern offers a historical perspective on the village before you focus on individual buildings or attractions.
Church and Historic Furnishings
The H.-Jacobus-de-Meerdere Church stands at Dorpsstraat 41. Theo Molkenboer designed the basilican cruciform church, which was built between 1857 and 1859. Its architecture includes a chancel with a three-sided apse and an integrated tower with a spire; the church is a provincial monument. Its furnishings also bring together different periods: the St.-Jacobus-de-Meerdere Church, restored in 1978, contains a richly carved high altar, a pulpit, Stations of the Cross and a communion rail dating from around 1860. The Ypma organ dates from 1875. At Dorpsstraat 39, a building complex is also listed as a provincial monument, serving as a church and rectory.
Museum and Leisure Activities
The Historisch Harenkarspel Museum is located in Van Blanckendaell Park in Tuitjenhorn. Its permanent exhibition includes dozens of objects from the past century. Among other things, visitors can see historic farming equipment, a furnished washing area, a bed and clothing. Blacksmithing tools, as well as kitchen and carpentry tools, round out the collection. The focus is on different aspects of everyday life in the past—from agriculture and household life to crafts.
For a different kind of outing, Holle Bolle Boom offers an indoor playground with slides, climbing equipment, ball pits and arcade games, as well as the subtropical Holle Bolle Plons water park. There are special play and paddling areas for younger children. The three named experiences are “Spelen,” “Plonsen” and “Roetsjen,” each giving the activities its own distinct focus.
