Schoorldam can be understood through its water management history and architectural heritage. A dam with a shipping opening, the crossing over the Rekere and the origin of the town’s name form a historical focus. Stolp farmhouses, protected buildings and a cycling route that passes through Schoorldam are also part of the picture. When planning your trip, you can explore local history, architecture and cycling as distinct topics.

Dam History and the Town’s Name

Around the year 1200, a dam with an opening for shipping was built across the Rekere at this location. The dam also served as a crossing. Water management and the crossing are therefore both part of its history; the opening for ships is as much a part of the story as its function as a crossing.

Later, the dam gave the settlement its name; the name derives from the dune village of Schoorl on the opposite side. This origin adds a local connection to the dam’s history and links the name Schoorldam to the dam as a crossing.

A separate chapter in the area’s canal history concerns the Hondsbossche Vaart: between 1820 and 1824, it was incorporated into the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. This date refers to a later historical event than the construction of the dam around 1200; the two dates represent different developments in the history of water management.

The town’s history also includes an artistic connection: Schoorldam was one of the small places where Pablo Picasso worked in June and July 1905. This connection adds a person and a clearly specified period to the history of water management. The town’s history can thus be understood not only through buildings and waterways, but also through this dated connection.

Stolp Farmhouses and Protected Buildings

Schoorldam has about 25 stolp farmhouses, including both older and more recent examples. Most of the historic examples are located on the Westfriesedijk and around Sluisweg. The approximate number refers to the group as a whole, while the location details refer to the historic buildings.

According to its foundation stone, a stolp farmhouse on the Westfriesedijk in Schoorldam dates from 1909 and is designated a municipal monument. The building is privately occupied.

Westfriesedijk 27 in Schoorldam is protected as a national monument (Rijksmonument) and is known as Cafe Sluiszicht. The rectangular front section has two storeys and a hipped roof; at the rear, a single-storey wing with a gabled roof adjoins it. The parts of the building therefore differ in both the number of storeys and the roof style.

The Grebmolen at Molenweg 1 near Schoorldam is also protected as a national monument (Rijksmonument). Alongside the stolp farmhouses and the building on the Westfriesedijk, the mill adds another type of structure to the picture.

Cycling Route Through Schoorldam

Between Schagen and Alkmaar, the Westfriese Omringdijk route follows the Westfriese Omringdijk and passes through Schoorldam. It provides a route to explore, while the buildings and historical details offer insight into individual aspects of the town. When planning your trip, you can consider the cycling route as a separate topic alongside water management history and architectural heritage.
