Egmond Aan Den Hoef: Castle History and Dune Landscape
Accommodation in Egmond Aan Den Hoef
Egmond aan den Hoef offers several starting points for planning a trip: historic buildings, landscape trails, cycling routes and a craft brewery. In the Slotkwartier, castle foundations and the Slotkapel recall the town’s history; six nature reserves are located nearby. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether cultural history, nature or a brewery tour is your priority.
Castle History and Cultural Sites
The Slotkwartier is home to six national heritage monuments, including the castle foundations and the surviving Slotkapel. The chapel was built next to Slot op den Hoef in 1227. It was set on fire in 1573; that same year, Slot op den Hoef was destroyed during the Eighty Years’ War. The chapel was restored in 1633, while the foundations of the former castle remain. The history is therefore visible in different forms: as a restored chapel and as the surviving traces of the former castle.
Another historic building is Hoeve Overslot, a monumental 16th-century structure in the heart of Egmond aan den Hoef. Today it is a cultural meeting place for residents of the Egmonden, people from the region and curious visitors from further afield. A bust of George Hitchcock stands in front of the building. Hitchcock was an American painter who ran the Art Summer School around 1900. The program at Hoeve Overslot may change.
As a cultural center, Huys Egmont holds a central place. Exhibitions at the visitor center are developed to introduce visitors to the history of the castle, the Van Egmond family and the surrounding area. Their content may also change over time.
Nature Reserves and Trails
Nearby, Natuurmonumenten manages six nature reserves, collectively known as the Weidse Polders, covering approximately 85 hectares. They include Loterijlanden, Broekertjes, Weide Nes, de Voert, Philisteinse Polder and Damlanderpolder. The names and total area give an overview of the reserves that stretch between Bergen, Alkmaar and Egmond aan den Hoef.
The Wimmenummerduinenroute runs along the edge of the dune area, known as the Bollenrand, and then through the unspoiled Wimmenummerduinen. After a section along the edge of the dunes, the route continues through the dunes. If you are interested in a route featuring these two landscape sections, this transition offers a clear point of reference. Another route description takes you partly through the dunes toward the Slotkapel in Egmond aan den Hoef.
Cycling and a Brewery Tour
The 43-kilometer Zee en meer cycling route starts in the three Egmonden, passes through Heiloo, Bollendorp, Akersloot, Uitgeest and Castricum, and then returns to Egmond. Check the route details again before setting out. The Fietsroute door de drie Egmonden names Egmond aan den Hoef alongside Egmond aan Zee and Egmond-Binnen as one of the three villages. When weighing up your route options, Zee en meer offers a specific distance and several named locations, while the other route specifically covers the three Egmonden.
Since 2018, Egmond aan den Hoef has had a craft brewery where, among other things, the Sancti Adalberti abbey beers are brewed. Visitors can take a guided tour of Brouwerij Egmond led by knowledgeable staff. If you plan to join the tour, check the current tour arrangements in advance, as they may change. This allows you to consider local history, the landscape and brewing culture as different focuses for your stay.
