Bergen offers a range of ways to spend your stay: art and cultural history sit alongside paths through forests, dunes and polder landscapes. A cinema, historic mills and boating routes are also among the options described. The different themes can be explored independently of one another.

Art and Culture in Bergen

Museum Kranenburgh focuses on modern and contemporary art. The Bergense School, an art movement influenced by Expressionism and Cubism, forms an important part of its foundation. There are also changing exhibitions. The museum also has an outdoor sculpture garden featuring works from its collection. The museum thus brings together an art-historical focus, changing exhibitions and outdoor sculptures as distinct aspects of its offering.

The RuĂŻnekerk stands in the center of Bergen. Its architecture combines historic walls and open ruins with an intimate church building. This contrast between enclosed and open structures is central to the description of the building: you encounter not only a ruin, but also a church interior.

Kunst10Daagse is also part of the cultural life of Bergen and Bergen aan Zee. The cultural festival traditionally takes place in October, with more than 300 artists exhibiting at around 160 different locations. Dates and the program vary from year to year. So if you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and program for the period in question.

Mills and History

Philisteinse Molen is an inland post mill in North Holland, built in 1897 and still in operation. Its history goes back to 1568: that was when the first polder mill was installed there to drain the Philisteinse Polder. Damlandermolen, a characteristic landmark of Bergen, was built in 1578. The sturdy, octagonal inland post mill was intended to protect around 135 hectares of shoreline land between the former Bergermeer and the southern edge of Bergen from excess water. Together, the two mills illustrate different historical approaches to water management: draining a polder and protecting shoreline land.

Another cultural venue is the Cinebergen cinema. It is housed in the listed Zwarte Schuur on the wooded estate of ’t Oude Hof in Bergen. Its program includes world cinema, classics, documentaries and children’s films, as well as special screenings and other events. The specific films and events on offer may vary.

Forests, Dunes and Paths

Bergerbos lies at the edge of the dunes in Bergen. The area offers tree-lined avenues, winding unpaved paths and gently undulating terrain for walks. The polder landscape has numerous paths, as well as winding walking and cycling routes. The landscapes described therefore have different qualities: trees, unpaved paths and gently undulating terrain define Bergerbos, while the polder landscape is described in terms of its paths and walking and cycling routes.

Noordhollands Duinreservaat stretches from Wijk aan Zee to Bergen. Everyone aged 18 or over needs a Duinkaart to visit. In the adjoining dune area, the influx of dune water supports special plant life; the natural area around Bergen is also home to many birds, frogs and salamanders. Alongside the landscapes themselves, plant and animal life is therefore another aspect of the region’s nature.

As a specific route, the “Blauwe route” starts at the Bergen Centrum starting point. The Sloepennetwerk also offers boating routes through Bergen and the surrounding area towards Bergermeer, Egmondermeer and Alkmaar. Rental and operating conditions may vary; check them when making specific plans.

Planning Your Journey and Stay

Bergen is accessible by bicycle, car and public transport. You can prioritize activities according to your interests: art, church architecture and the history of the mills offer a cultural focus, while Bergerbos, the polder paths and the dune area provide other points of interest. For a stay around Kunst10Daagse, the dates for that particular year are also a factor. This allows you to choose your destination based on the themes that interest you most during your time in Bergen.
