Waalre combines nature, local history and cultural attractions. Its natural landscape includes forests, marshes and heathland. There are also GPS-guided audio tours, a historic market with several monuments, and sights and exhibitions with a wide range of themes. Choosing Waalre as your destination lets you explore this variety and decide which interests to focus on during your stay.

Nature and Activities at Vlindertuin

In the village of Waalre, Vlindertuin Waalre is located on the grounds of a former municipal tree nursery. The garden has been open since June 2003. It offers a way to connect with nature within the village, while Waalre’s forests, marshes and heathland make up the natural landscapes mentioned above.

Regular activities at Vlindertuin include children’s afternoons, workdays and moth counts. The activities range from events for children and practical work to observing nocturnal moths. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between these formats: they are separate activities, not one unified programme.

Podwalks and Playground

The Waalre Walks are GPS-guided audio tours known as podwalks. They let you experience stories about Waalre on location. At some stops, augmented reality can be used to bring the past to life. The format thus combines audio storytelling with a digital depiction of history, with augmented reality available at selected stops.

Another clearly defined place to visit is the Speeltuin de Klimbim adventure playground. It is located in the middle of Waalre’s forests and covers approximately 6,000 square metres. Around 50 play structures are intended for children from toddler age to approximately ten years old. The approximate area and number of play structures give an idea of the playground’s size; the age range indicates its intended users.

Churches, Monuments and Village History

The Oude Willibrorduskerkje dates back to the 12th century. After the Second World War, it was designated a provincial memorial to Brabant’s fallen soldiers. Its age and its later designation as a memorial bring together two distinct periods: the church’s long history and the remembrance of the fallen soldiers.

The historic market, with its several monuments, is a recommended attraction in the village of Waalre. The Oude Sint Willibrordkerkje on Oude Torenstraat is also recommended as a sight. The hamlet of Loon in Waalre has been designated a protected village landscape since 1971. These places offer different points of interest: alongside churches and monuments, Loon focuses on the preservation of the village landscape.

Art, Damask and Chocolate

The Waalres Museum displays antique damask from Europe’s largest damask collection. The fabrics were made between 1550 and 1800. The museum also exhibits works by established visual artists and emerging talents. Visitors can therefore see both historic textiles from a clearly defined period and art by artists at different stages of their careers.

Another offering in Waalre is the children’s version of the Rudolf Vermeulen chocolate workshop. It includes a tour of the factory and making solid chocolates and chocolate lollipops. Important for planning your trip: children’s workshops are temporarily unavailable at present and can be scheduled again from 4 January 2027. If you would like to include this workshop in your stay, check availability from that date.
