Lage Mierde: Architectural History, Walking Trails and Farm Life
Accommodation in Lage Mierde
Lage Mierde offers a variety of things to enjoy during your stay: St. Stephen’s Church, other distinctive buildings, walking trails and experiences involving gardens and farm animals. Whether you are interested in architectural history or would rather choose a particular route, the village’s sights and trails give your stay a clear focus.
St. Stephen’s Church and Architectural History
The Roman Catholic St. Stephen’s Church at Dorpsplein 1 is listed as a Rijksmonument in the Rijksmonumentenregister. Its Gothic basilican nave dates from the 15th century; the transept and choir were built in 1912. The building thus reflects different periods of construction.
The tower also has distinctive features: it has angled buttresses on its west side, as well as a polygonal stair turret. The mechanical clock mechanism was made by Kerkhof en Zn. in 1909 and is no longer in operation. Visitors interested in architecture can therefore appreciate both the overall form of the Gothic nave and specific details of the tower.
Another architectural highlight is Villa “De Mispelbocht,” built in 1932. Its design incorporates elements of the Amsterdam School and Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (New Objectivity). Its well-preserved exterior and style account for its architectural and historical significance; the design’s aesthetic qualities are also of particular importance to the streetscape of Lage Mierde.
At Wellenseind 6 is a restored farmstead of the Kempische Langgevel type. Its appearance includes a thatched wolf-end roof with a tiled base, cross-mullioned windows with small panes and shutters. Together with the church and villa, the farmstead offers another example of the variety of architectural styles found in Lage Mierde.
Walking Trails Starting from Dorpsplein
The Sint-Stephanus walking routes start at Dorpsplein. They are intended to help visitors and residents learn more about Lage Mierde and its surroundings, both past and present. The options include the green Raamsloop route, which is 3 kilometres long and wheelchair accessible.
For a longer walk, consider the “Lage Mierde – Panneven – Landgoed de Utrecht” trail. It starts at Dorpsplein in the centre and is just over 16 kilometres long. The route passes through heathland, forests and villages, by Panneven and across Landgoed de Utrecht. The “Ommetje Lage Mierde,” by contrast, is a 5.5-kilometre circular route: from Dorpsplein, it first goes through the village and then along the fields. The route lengths and varied terrain help you choose a walk to suit your preferred distance and scenery. Route details for the walk to Panneven and Landgoed de Utrecht may change; local ground conditions on the Ommetje may vary. Check the latest information before setting out.
Countryside and Outdoor Experiences
Mispeleindse Heide, part of Landgoed de Utrecht, lies north of Lage Mierde. Lage Mierde itself is situated on a ridge between two rivers that converge north of the village. These landscape features offer another perspective on the area beyond the village’s walking trails.
At Voor Anker in Lage Mierde, visitors can stroll around the grounds, which include orchards and gardens, and see a wide variety of farm animals. The artisanal kitchen prepares dishes using ingredients from its own orchards and gardens, from the estate’s Brandrode cattle, and from local partner suppliers. Menus may change seasonally. Voor Anker therefore combines gardens and farm animals with a kitchen that uses these sources of ingredients.
Food grows in abundance in the Voedselbos Lage Mierde. People can relax there and work with nature. This offers a different focus from the walks: here, growing food and working with nature take centre stage.
Cycling Routes and Choosing a Distance
Various cycling routes of different lengths start at Voor Anker on Landgoed Wellenseind. A report on the 2025 edition of Fiets4Daagse Lage Mierde lists a daily route of around 30 to 35 kilometres and a longer one of around 65 to 70 kilometres. The routes were fully signposted; the report also notes that new routes are planned each year. These details relate to the 2025 edition and provide a time-specific comparison with the walking trails: you can choose between the signposted cycling distances and the walking routes described here.
