Discover Zevenbergen: history, harbour and nature
Accommodation in Zevenbergen
Zevenbergen combines cultural and historical sights with nature that is ideal for peaceful cycling and walking trips. The historic town centre lies around the former harbour. The town is also a good starting point for exploring the West Brabant region, situated between De Biesbosch National Park, historic Willemstad and Breda.
The harbour and churches as historical landmarks
A guided town walk follows the route of Zevenbergen’s centuries-old harbour. It was filled in in 1970 and reopened in 2019. The harbour route provides a geographical point of reference for the walk; the two dates mark both an earlier and a more recent change in its history.
The Sint Catharinakerk is a Gothic church whose oldest parts date from the 14th century. The church’s Grote Klok dates from 1410 and is of particular historical value. The building and the bell therefore offer two distinct historical reference points within the same church.
The Sint Catharinakerk can be visited before or after a service, or by arrangement. If you want to make a specific visit to the church, check the available options in advance.
The Roman Catholic H. Bartholomeüs church represents a different period of construction: it was built in 1929–1930 to plans by the architect J. Stuyt. In comparison with the Gothic Sint Catharinakerk, it dates from a considerably later period.
Industrial history and guided visits
The sugar industry also offers a glimpse into Zevenbergen’s past. Azelma, the first sugar factory in the Netherlands, was established in Zevenbergen in 1858. The old sugar factory on Blokweg remained in operation for the longest. Economic history thus complements the churches and their architecture, offering another point of interest during your stay.
At Museum Zevenbergen, also known as the Oudheidskamer, the Heemkundekring Willem van Strijen offers guided tours for groups of up to 30 people. If you would like a guided tour to be part of your visit, check in advance whether one is available on your chosen date.
A guided town walk and a museum tour offer two different ways to visit: the walk follows the harbour route, while the museum tour takes place inside the museum and is available for groups of up to 30 people. You can choose between a walk through the town and a museum visit.
Exhibitions for children are held in the attic of the Milieu Educatief Centrum, which is part of Kinderboerderij De Dierenploeg. If you are travelling with children, this exhibition venue can provide a separate activity alongside the historical attractions.
Nature and planning your stay
The countryside around Zevenbergen is ideal for peaceful cycling and walking trips. This allows you to set aside time for outdoor activities as well as visiting historical sites. Town visits and nature trips offer different focuses, which you can balance according to your interests.
During opening hours, the Toeristisch Informatiepunt Zevenbergen provides tourist information, cycling routes and town maps. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance. You can use the routes and town maps to help plan your stay.
This makes it easy to choose the focus of your trip based on the different options in and around Zevenbergen.
