In Grave, its fortified past is present in its buildings, museums and routes. The historic town centre brings together visible traces of its time as a fortress with churches and buildings dating back several centuries. You can choose different focuses when planning your trip: the town’s history, its museums, or walking and cycling routes.

Grave and its Fortress History

Grave is considered the most frequently besieged fortified town in the Netherlands. Traces of this past are still visible in the historic town centre. There you will find numerous notable and carefully restored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, impressive monuments, and remarkable monasteries and churches. Winding little streets and lanes invite you to explore the centre on foot.

The Stadsmuseum Grave is housed in the 17th-century Hampoort, one of the former entrances to the town. The permanent exhibition in the historic gatehouse focuses on Grave as a fortified town and its numerous sieges. The Hampoort is the only one of the former town gates to have survived, although it no longer serves as a gate. Today’s Hampoort was built between 1686 and 1688.

The churches also preserve distinctive architectural features. The Bagijnenkerk is a Gothic building from the 15th century with a characteristic brick-enclosed stair tower. The Sint Elisabethkerk was probably founded around 1240 during the reign of Hendrik III van Cuyk (1233–1268) as a small Romanesque church.

Museums and Technical History

The Kazemattenmuseum Grave explains what the Second World War meant for Grave and its surroundings. A different historical perspective is offered by the Arsenaal complex in the southwest of the old fortified town’s ramparts. It consists of three structures built for military purposes: a former arsenal, originally dating from 1534; a former powder house from 1689; and a cavalier, also called a cat, from 1694, with five casemates. In 1898, J. van Lokhorst converted the powder house into a chapel.

The Gemaal van Sasse was the first electric pumping station commissioned by the former De Maaskant water board. Today, it serves as an experience centre with a 3D exhibition about the pumping station’s past and present. The Zuiderwaterlinie visitor centre in Grave is designed as a mini-museum: interactive and informative exhibits cover the Zuiderwaterlinie and the Grave-Ravenstein position. It is next to the Tourist Information Grave in the historic town hall. Walking, cycling and driving routes leading to the highlights of the Zuiderwaterlinie are sold there. Check that your chosen route is available before visiting.
