Vessem offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: a protected natural area, historic buildings, and walking routes with their own themes and, in some cases, stated distances. This lets you decide whether the countryside, local history, or an annual event is especially important to your stay.

Natural Areas and Green Routes

The Kleine Beerze in Vessem is a Natura 2000 site and receives additional protection because of its special or rare plants and animals. The De Kleine Beerze nature area offers walking paths, a woodland garden, a village garden, a beach, a swallow wall, and an observation tower. The different stops give the natural area a varied character.

The De Mythe van de Kruidendokter audio route passes through the northern part of Vessem, along the Landschotse Heide and right beside the Kleine Beerze. The Voedselbos en dorpsmoestuin Vessem also connects nature with community involvement: schoolchildren and other volunteers planted around 1,250 trees and shrubs on the one-hectare site. Fruit trees, hazels, sweet chestnuts, and several hundred berry bushes grow there.

Mill, Church and Village History

The Jacobusmolen is a post mill used to grind grain and was built in 1893. The tower of the Sint Lambertuskerk dates from the 15th century, around 1475. De Pastorie, built in 1849, stands right next to the church. It was once home to several generations of pastors and a focal point of village life.

Another stop on the Ommetje Maaskant Vessem walking route is the Hallenboerderij aan de Maaskant. The route passes the farmhouse, which dates from the 14th century, is more than 600 years old, and is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in Noord-Brabant. De Naald commemorates the village’s victims and resilience during the war years. The Doodsbergen are associated with a former execution site. The Avia Xpress benzinepomp/museum in Vessem displays vintage cars, motorcycles, and old petrol pumps.

As a meeting place, the Jacobushoeve offers secondhand shops, a garden, a workshop, and the Praathuis. These different places and stories give the village’s history several facets, from buildings and former uses to remembrance and community life.

The Ommetje Grootakker Vessem covers 3.6 kilometers through the surrounding countryside and brings together history, pilgrimage traditions, and rural paths. The Ommetje Maaskant Vessem is 8 kilometers long and leads through the peaceful countryside; the Hallenboerderij aan de Maaskant lies along the way.

The three stated distances help you compare how long the routes take: the Monumentenwandeling is listed with a duration of 45 minutes as well as its length, while Grootakker and Maaskant are longer walks of 3.6 and 8 kilometers respectively. Another option, the Ommetje Lille Vessem, passes through the historic center. The Rondom het Rietven route passes the remains of the Leeuwerik hoeve.
