Discover Liempde: Nature, Routes and History
Accommodation in Liempde
Liempde brings together landscapes, cycling routes and local history. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in the village, choosing a clear focus can help with planning. You can explore nature, the clog-making tradition or the history of the old railway line. It’s also worth comparing the routes: one passes through the centre, while another is a 155-kilometre cycling route.
Landscape and nature watching
The privately owned Landgoed Velder is in Liempde and covers 180 hectares. After coppicing ceased to serve its purpose, the estate was transformed into a park forest. The De Scheeken woodland lies south of Liempde, between Landgoed Velder and the Dommel valley. The two names refer to different landscapes around the village.
Visitors can watch red deer in the Scheeken. The number of animals and viewing conditions can change, so treat a sighting as a possibility rather than a guaranteed part of your itinerary. Brabants Landschap runs excursions to see red deer during the rutting season. Check the seasonal dates before your trip.
Cycling routes and local paths
The 8-kilometre Klompenbeleefroute passes through the centre of Liempde and visits several places connected with the clog-making tradition. The 155-kilometre cycling route was developed along the old Duits Lijntje railway line. The distances reflect different scales: one route passes through the village centre and focuses on clog-making, while the other is a longer cycling route along the former railway line.
The Boxtel–Wesel railway line, also known as the Duits Lijntje, opened in 1873 and runs through Liempde. If you’re planning to cycle the route, check the latest route information before setting out, as details may change.
Walking and finding your way
D’n Liempdsen Herd is a tourist information point and visitor centre, and a convenient stop for cycling, walking and motorcycling tours. It provides information about the immediate area and walking and cycling routes. Visitor services may change, so check the latest information before planning a visit.
The “Kerkenpaden door Liempde” walk starts at the D’n Liempdsen Herd visitor centre, Barrierweg 4, Liempde. Route details may change, so check the current route before setting out. Another walk, “Dommelrondje met het pontje,” includes crossing the Dommel on a self-operated ferry. Use of the ferry may depend on local conditions, so check in advance whether the crossing is possible.
History and traditions
The Groot Duijfhuis complex is in Kasteren, a hamlet of Liempde, and is a Rijksmonument—a Dutch national monument. Local paths also have a historical dimension: Liempde once had many church paths with a combined length of 2.5 kilometres. This figure describes the former paths; it does not indicate which ones are still accessible or remain today.
The Boeremèrt is a traditional event in Liempde that helps keep local heritage alive. If you’d like to plan your stay around the event, check the dates before travelling.
