The compact city center of Bergen Op Zoom is home to more than 600 historic buildings. Activities range from a city walk past the monuments to a hiking stage and a longer cycling tour; the De Zeezuiper nature reserve also lies east of the city. This gives you a choice between historic urban surroundings, longer routes, and landscapes when planning your trip.

Urban heritage between the city gate and the palace

In 2012, the Singel area in the broader city-center district was designated a protected townscape. Such a designation draws attention to the townscape as a whole, not just individual buildings. The Gevangenpoort is one of the oldest surviving city gates in the Netherlands. Guided tours cover its history as a defensive structure, as well as former prisoners and prison guards. At this city gate, the history of the building meets the stories of the people connected with its former use.

The Markiezenhof offers another way to explore the past of Bergen Op Zoom. Built in the 15th century as the residential palace of the lords and margraves of Bergen Op Zoom, it now houses a museum about the history of the city and surrounding region. Its former residential function and its current use as a museum bring architectural history together with the history of the city and region in one place.

Getting around on foot and by bike

The Bergen Op Zoom Citymap includes a city walk past the monuments. A longer hiking option is the first stage of the Zuiderwaterlinie: it runs from Bergen Op Zoom to Steenbergen and is 19.2 kilometers long. The options differ in scale and destination. The walk passes monuments in the city; the hiking stage runs between two towns. Check current route conditions before setting out.

The type of tour is also worth considering when comparing it with the hiking stage: the 52-kilometer Fietsronde Bergen op Zoom includes a coffee stop in Bergen op Zoom, while the Zuiderwaterlinie stage continues on foot to Steenbergen. Individual businesses and services may change; check current details about the coffee stop before setting off. This gives you two different options: a hiking route with a stated destination and a cycling tour with a stop along the way.

Landscape and views

De Zeezuiper is a nature reserve east of Bergen Op Zoom. Brabants Landschap has partially restored the former wetland area of De Zeezuiper. Its location and landscape history give the reserve a different focus from the historic buildings in the center.

The Peperbus can also be part of your sightseeing plans: you can climb the tower, which offers beautiful views. Seasonal access conditions may vary, so check the current conditions before your visit.

Getting to the city center

Bergen Op Zoom city center is easily accessible by bicycle, train, or car. The railway station is next to the city center and within walking distance. These are three transport options for getting to the city and exploring it.
